Enterprise Risk Management – Director
Context

Management of risk is fundamental to the successful delivery of our services to clients and the maintenance of our reputation. The world in which we operate continues to grow more complex to navigate, with dramatic macroeconomic and geopolitical shifts, continual and fast-paced change, including rapid advances in technology and new expectations of the future of work, which are changing EY, our clients and their needs. While this provides exciting opportunities, growth in this environment creates new and evolving risks. Agile and creative risk management will be needed if the firm is to successfully navigate the challenges it will face. Central to this is the role of the Enterprise Risk Management team.

The opportunity

There is a vacancy at Director level in the Enterprise Risk Management team, operating within the wider Risk Management function. This is a senior position with broad responsibility for shaping the firm’s approach to enterprise risk and working closely with senior leadership to identify, monitor and manage the UK firm’s key risks.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join EY’s ERM team at a time of significant change.

Risk Management and Enterprise Risk in EY

Within EY, the Risk Management function is responsible for safeguarding the UK firm in respect of its key risks. Specialist teams focus on key risks areas, including Enterprise Risk, Compliance, Financial Crime, Business Resilience, Independence and Conflicts. The function is responsible for the promotion, protection and support of risk management within the business.

Enterprise Risk Management is responsible for the identification, assessment and monitoring of the UK firm’s principal risks. It provides support to Leadership and the Service Lines in the management of risk through the provision of frameworks and tools, independent risk assessment and advice on critical business decisions, as well as training and guidance to raise understanding and awareness. Its approach is dynamic and forward looking, working with the business and with specialist support functions to identify emerging or evolving risks resulting from the firm’s strategic direction and external context.

This is an exciting time to be joining the Enterprise Risk Team. The function and the framework are well established. The team is now embarking on a strategic review to enhance the effectiveness of Enterprise Risk Management to support the mitigation of material risks and enable sustainable business growth.

This role will be responsible for risk oversight of the firm’s Service Lines and principal risks. The role is an important one and will involve working closely with stakeholders to:

  • shape and implement the revised strategy;
  • obtain an independent view of the risk profile and the effectiveness of risk management;
  • support business decision making from a risk perspective; and
  • represent Enterprise Risk, and champion risk management, with the business.

Stakeholders will include Risk Owners and Chief Risk Officers (CROs) for the Service Lines, as well as business and CBS leadership and functional teams as required. Part of the Enterprise Risk Management leadership team, the successful candidate will report to the Enterprise Risk Management Leader, who in turn reports to the Managing Partner, Risk Management.

Your key responsibilities.
Strategy and Framework
  • Build strong relationships with senior partners and other stakeholders in the business;
  • contribute to the design and embedding of an effective framework for risk management in each business area;
  • identify opportunities for change and increased collaboration across the risk community to enhance business outcomes; and
  • communicate progress on risk management (including control and information deficiencies) to stakeholders and governance forums.
Risk and Controls Assessment
  • Contribute to regular reviews of firm risks and risk profile;
  • ensure risk ownership and accountabilities are fully embedded and understood, with risk appetite and tolerances appropriately set and cascaded;
  • identify and assess new and changing risks;
  • independently assess individual and portfolio risks, representing this view to senior audiences;
  • support the escalation of material risks and support lessons learned to be undertaken to enable business growth; and
  • provide advice and guidance on the risk aspects of specific business issues.
Strategic Change
  • Lead risk assessments of key strategic changes and business plans;
  • engage with major change programmes to identify and mitigate risks; and
  • review new or amended products and services proposed by the business, and provide the risk assessment, co-ordinating with other Risk Management Teams, to produce a consolidated view, with recommendations on risk treatment and risk management.
Skills and attributes for success
  • Ability to deal with problems in a practical and common-sense way, applying judgment to resolving complex risk matters and to provide pragmatic, outcomes focused solutions to stakeholders;
  • able to establish a high degree of credibility, respect and trust at all levels, including working closely with equity partners in the firm;
  • the ability to translate vision into design, and to implement the required change; and
  • able to lead and motivate people and teams.
To qualify for the role, you must have
  • Experience of operating at senior levels;
  • strong experience in risk management, including the ability to identify risks and propose appropriate mitigating actions; and
  • knowledge of professional services firms, of the typical range of businesses operated and an understanding of the business model and commercial considerations.
Ideally, you’ll also have
  • Strong personal communication skills, capable of using appropriate verbal and written techniques in dealing with wide a range of people, and particularly at Board and Senior Management levels;
  • effective planning and organisational skills to prioritise key areas of responsibility, tasks and projects; and
  • relevant risk management qualifications.
