JOB TITLE: Teacher - Post-Primary

REPORTS TO: Principal

Professional Duties of a Teacher
Regulations

Teachers’ (Terms and Conditions of Employment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1987

Schedule 3, Regulation 5

  1. Exercise of general professional duties
  2. A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out professional duties as circumstances require, including:
  • (a) Employed as a teacher under the reasonable direction of the school principal;
  • (b) Employed by a board without specific school assignment, under the reasonable direction of the board and any school principal where required.
  1. Exercise of particular duties
  2. Teachers shall perform duties reasonably assigned by the principal or the employing authority, including:
  • (a) Performing duties in accordance with directions from the principal;
  • (b) Performing duties as directed by the board or principal of any school where they work.
Responsibilities
  1. Planning
  2. Planning and preparing courses and lessons;
  3. Teaching pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work;
  4. Assessing, recording, and reporting on pupils’ development, progress, and attainment.
  1. General
  2. Promoting pupils’ progress and well-being;
  3. Providing advice and guidance on educational, social, and career matters;
  4. Making records and reports on pupils’ personal and social needs;
  5. Communicating with pupils’ parents;
  6. Collaborating with outside bodies approved by the authority and governors;
  7. Participating in related meetings.
  1. Assessment/Reporting
  2. Providing assessments, reports, and references on pupils, avoiding compromising positions.
  1. Staff Development
  2. Participating in staff development schemes;
  3. Reviewing and developing teaching methods and programmes;
  4. Advising on course development, teaching materials, and assessment methods.
  1. Discipline/Health and Safety
  2. Maintaining good order and discipline, ensuring health and safety;
  3. Participating in curriculum and organizational meetings.
  1. Public Examinations
  2. Preparing pupils for exams, assessing, recording, and supervising during exams.
  1. Management and Administration
  2. Contributing to staff appointment, development, and management activities;
  3. Participating in administrative tasks, including support supervision and equipment management;
  1. Work Schedule
  2. Availability for 195 days/year, with specific hours and duties as specified;
  3. Restrictions on weekly teaching hours and break requirements;
  1. Staff Cover
  2. Supervising pupils when teachers are absent, with specific conditions based on school size.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications: Recognized teaching qualification, degree Level 6 in English.

Knowledge of the NI Curriculum, Safeguarding, SEND Code of Practice, assessment methods; ability to teach and manage classrooms; collaborative skills; alignment with school ethos.

Desirable Criteria

Experience teaching English Literature at Key Stage Four and Five; teaching Essential Skills Communication.
