English for Academic Purposes Teaching Fellow (presessional)

Location: Edgbaston, Birmingham

We are looking to recruit suitably qualified and experienced Teaching Fellows on Casual Appointment contracts for our summer 2025 10, 6 and 4-week Presessional English courses.
Postholders will be responsible for teaching English for Academic Purposes to postgraduate, undergraduate or Foundation Presessional students as Class Teachers or Language Support Teachers.
Summer 2025 courses are on campus for the 10, 6- & 4-week courses and online for the 10 & 6-week. On-campus staff must be within commutable distance to campus. Staff teaching the online programme must be in the UK for the duration of the course.

Main Responsibilities

Class Teachers
• Teach courses of up to 21 contact hours per week including tutorials to students preparing for undergraduate or postgraduate study over a range of courses through seminars and lectures. Provide pastoral care and academic advice in a prompt and effective manner.
• Plan and prepare own teaching using the established course materials supplementing according to student needs, taking responsibility for the monitoring of students’ academic learning outcomes, tracking progress and benchmarking achievement against set targets.
• Supervise student projects, particularly students’ portfolio assignments. Assist students to improve their academic communications skills, develop relevant study skills and habits and adapt to their new environments socially and academically.
• Conduct one-to-one tutorial sessions with each student in own group.
• Refer students requiring additional support to the Language Support Team and/or the Programme Manager.

Language Support Teachers
• Provide 1:1/small group support to students identified as requiring extra help.
• Team teach with class teachers.
• Offer, plan and deliver workshops on areas of EAP skills for larger groups.
• Be available for planned/unplanned cover for class teacher absences.

Person Specification

• Class Teachers should have Cambridge DELTA/Trinity Dip. TESOL or MA in ELT and CELTA plus extensive ELT experience especially in the HE sector. Other combinations that comply with our British Council accreditation.
• Language Support Tutors provide additional classes to students who need extra support. For this post, we can accept applicants with a lower level teaching qualification (CELTA, Trinity Cert. etc.) or less experience.

Our Presessional is open to students under the age of 18. Teachers need to be aware of safeguarding and welfare practices associated with this group of students. A DBS check may be required upon appointment.

Job Salary & Benefits

Full-time starting salary is normally in the range £36,130 to £45,413.
Fully subsidised campus accommodation is available from early July (date tbc).

Teaching posts are full-time, although we will consider part-time/job share. Applicants need to be available for the full length of the course, plus induction.
