• Provide management cover when required and contribute to wider operations.
• Collaborate with production teams to minimise downtime and improve reliability.

Hours: Monday-Friday | Double Days | 6:00am-2:00pm / 2:00pm-10:00pm

The Opportunity

We are recruiting for an Engineering Team Leader to join an established manufacturing business at their site in Preston.

This is a hands-on leadership role within a clean, modern manufacturing environment, overseeing a team of Mechanical Maintenance Technicians and Machine Setters/Operators across automated filling and production equipment.

Working closely with the Engineering Manager, you'll oversee daily engineering activities, support team development and remain hands-on with maintenance and fault finding when required. You'll also assist with wider management responsibilities, including 1-to-1s, appraisals and providing management cover.

The business is particularly keen to find someone with ambitions to progress into senior engineering management. This role offers the opportunity to develop those skills, gradually take on greater responsibility and potentially progress into a more senior management position over the next few years.

Key Responsibilities

• Supervise and support Mechanical Maintenance Technicians and Machine Setters/Operators, coordinating daily workloads and maintenance priorities.
• Provide hands-on mechanical engineering support, assisting with breakdowns, fault finding and repairs when required.
• Oversee production equipment performance, including machine set-up, changeovers and planned maintenance activities.
• Support the Engineering Manager with 1-to-1s, appraisals, performance management and team development.
• Provide management cover when required, supporting wider engineering and operational responsibilities.
• Work closely with production teams to minimise downtime, improve equipment reliability and maintain operational efficiency.
• Ensure compliance with health, safety and engineering standards, maintaining accurate maintenance documentation.

You should have:

• Strong mechanical engineering or maintenance experience within a manufacturing or production environment.
• Proven supervisory or team leadership experience, ideally overseeing engineers, technicians or production teams.
• Experience mentoring and developing team members, including involvement in 1-to-1s, appraisals and performance management.
• Strong mechanical fault-finding skills, with the confidence to provide hands-on technical support.
• Experience coordinating workloads, prioritising maintenance activities and supporting departmental compliance.
• Confidence attending management meetings, providing operational updates and contributing to wider business decisions.
• Strong communication and people management skills, with the ability to handle challenging conversations.
• Ambition to develop into a more senior engineering management position over the next few years.

The ideal candidate will combine strong mechanical engineering expertise with proven leadership experience, enjoying both hands-on engineering and people management.

Experience within FMCG, food, pharmaceutical, packaging or other automated manufacturing environments would be advantageous, although other manufacturing backgrounds will also be considered.
