Job summary

STS Defence seeks an Engineering Support Manager (Programmes) to lead the Programme Management Team's resources, qualifications, personal development and risk management, ensuring delivery and continuous improvement for personnel benefits.

You will coordinate resources, interdependencies and SQEP quality, report progress to senior leadership and explore new business opportunities while supporting product safety training and stakeholder communication.

Qualifications

  • Leadership and people management experience.
  • Strong planning, monitoring and control of personnel.
  • Proven budget management and business case development skills.
  • Familiarity with recruitment and personnel development processes.
  • Knowledge of MSP, PRINCE2, APM, Change Management and MoR methodologies.
  • Understanding of budgetary and resource allocation procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and maintain an effective support regime for programmes; monitor progress and take corrective action.
  • Ensure quality assurance around project delivery and SQEP consistency with STS Defence strategy and customer expectations.
  • Facilitate assignment of individuals to Integrated Project Teams for complex projects.
  • Maintain adequate resources and allocate skills to projects.
  • Manage communications with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Manage SQEP dependencies and interfaces between projects.
  • Report progress to Business Manager and Managing Director as per the communications plan.
  • Identify and pursue new business development opportunities.
  • Oversee Product Safety Training.

Engineering Support Manager (Programmes)

The Engineering Support Manager is responsible for the successful delivery and co‑ordination of the Programme Management Team’s resources, qualifications, personal development, management of their interdependencies and oversight of their risks and issues arising. The role also includes the co‑ordination of new skills and continuous improvement to enable effective change and realisation of personnel and programme benefits.

Duties:
The Engineering Support Manager is responsible for:

  • Planning and maintaining an effective support regime, proactively monitoring its progress, resolving issues and initiating appropriate corrective action
  • Ensuring effective quality assurance around project delivery – focusing on Suitably Qualified Experienced Personnel (SQEP) consistency for programmes, alignment with STS Defence strategy and outwardly on its coherence with customer expectation and specialist standards
  • Facilitating the assignment of individuals to Integrated Project Teams for complex projects
  • Ensuring the maintenance of sufficient resources and skills for programme activities and the effective allocation of required skills to individual projects
  • Managing communications with all internal and relevant external stakeholders
  • Managing the SQEP dependencies and interfaces between projects
  • Reporting the progress of the support regime at regular intervals to the Business Manager and Managing Director, as directed in the company communications plan
  • Proactive identification and exploitation of all new business development opportunities
  • Product Safety Training

Skills/Qualifications:
The Engineering Support Manager should have:

  • Effective leadership, management, interpersonal and communications skills
  • The ability to command respect and to create a sense of community within the engineering support teams
  • Good knowledge of the techniques for planning, monitoring and controlling personnel
  • Sound business case development and approvals skills
  • Good understanding of recruitment, personnel development processes and negotiation with third parties
  • An understanding of programme and project management methods such as MSP, PRINCE2, APM, Change Management and MoR
  • Good knowledge of budgetary and resource allocation procedures
