Job summary

The Pirbright Institute is a world-leading research centre focused on viral diseases affecting livestock and public health. The Engineering Safety Advisor role supports engineering safety, risk management and compliance across the campus in Pirbright, Surrey.

You will develop audits, support risk assessments and lead safety investigations while collaborating with safety, quality and engineering teams to uphold high standards and governance.

Qualifications

• NEBOSH Level 3 National General Certificate or equivalent health and safety qualification.
• Experience in Health & Safety, Risk or Safety Assurance roles.
• Experience with investigations, including interviewing employees and root cause analysis.
• Strong understanding of risk assessment principles and their practical application.
• Ability to analyse safety performance data and produce clear reports and recommendations.
• Experience with ISO 45001, ISO 9001 or ISO 14001 would be advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Develop, conduct and review audits and inspections on engineering processes across all operational areas.
• Provide support for risk assessment activities and reviews within Engineering.
• Carry out Human Factors Assessments and support integration of human factors into operations.
• Update information management systems for contractor and staff activities on site.
• Attend periodic Operational and Health and Safety meetings; provide Safety Reports for KPIs.
• Support incident investigations and take lead to ensure compliance and closure when required.
• Collaborate with Quality, Health, Safety and Engineering teams to ensure compliance with health, safety and biosecurity requirements.
• Identify training needs and develop safety training for engineering operations staff.
• Support the Institute’s Process Safety Management System (PSMS) and attend related meetings.
• Participate in health, safety and quality assurance procedures as appropriate.
