Job description

If you're looking for a career that will help you stand out, join HSBC, and fulfill your potential - whether you want a career that could take you to the top, or simply take you in an exciting new direction, HSBC offers opportunities, support, and rewards that will take you further.

HSBC is one of the largest banking and financial services organizations in the world, with operations in 64 countries and territories. We aim to be where the growth is, enabling businesses to thrive and economies to prosper, and ultimately helping people to fulfill their hopes and realize their ambitions.

Overview:

The ESG Data Utility (EDU) is a software platform or ecosystem that provides a mechanism to store, transform large amounts of raw data into consumable, high-quality 'Data Assets' ready for analytics.

To make the data consumable, we provide multiple mechanisms to transform raw data via data pipelines into high-quality assets. These Data Assets are designed by business domains to be reusable across many use cases. The quality of each Data Asset is recorded and assured through a governance process, giving confidence in their reliability for analytics.

The EDU also offers a mechanism to enrich information about relationships between Data Assets, focusing on ESG-specific views. We utilize advanced techniques and technology to achieve a comprehensive view of business interactions and ESG commitments.

The platform is undergoing a significant upgrade to enhance its capabilities, with ESG leading the adoption of new technical solutions to build a high-quality data platform aligned with HSBC's Environmental, Social, and Governance commitments.

Purpose of the job:

The Engineer Pod Lead will own and manage the end-to-end delivery of capabilities on the Data platform. Responsibilities include developing solutions and design ideas related to engineering, maintaining services, and identifying design improvements to meet acceptance and success criteria, particularly for complex technical solutions. The role involves working with architects and solution designers to build platform components on both on-premises and Cloud environments.

As a key member of the technical team, you will contribute to our collaborative agile development process, including:

  • Integrating with an established, complex Hadoop/GCP-based project under tight deadlines.
  • Collaborating with globally dispersed and diverse teams.
  • Supporting specific use cases and onboarding new ones.

Must Haves:

  • Hands-on experience building microservices using Java/Spring Boot.
  • Experience managing a small engineering Agile team.
  • Exposure to innovative engineering environments with demonstrable experience.
  • Promoting development standards, conducting code reviews, mentoring, and sharing knowledge.
  • Hands-on experience in big data and Cloud environments, ideally GCP.
  • Understanding of software development and DevOps CI/CD practices.

Good to have skills:

  • Experience in matrix-managed large-scale organizations.
  • Hands-on experience with Kubernetes and Docker.
  • Knowledge of Data Engineering tools such as Spark, Scala, Hadoop, and scheduling services like Apache Airflow.
  • Experience working with cloud applications and infrastructure.

We offer hybrid working arrangements, with the site location flexible among offices in Birmingham, Sheffield, and Edinburgh.

At HSBC, we value diverse perspectives and are committed to creating inclusive workplaces for everyone, regardless of gender, ethnicity, disability, religion, sexual orientation, or age. We are a Disability Confident Leader and will offer interviews to candidates with disabilities, long-term conditions, or neurodivergence who meet the role's minimum criteria.
