Option 1 - Mechelec

The Journey Begins With You

Our industry recognised Engineering apprenticeship schemes are a great way to kick-start your career. This Mechelec Apprenticeship will give you the knowledge and skills to become a world-class engineer, accomplish your career and financial goals, and give you a trade for life.

Unlike schemes at other companies, the Stagecoach Apprenticeship Scheme will give you unlimited support, with a dedicated mentor throughout the 4 years. You will meet regularly with Managers and Engineering Directors for advice and guidance and start the course with a comprehensive toolkit.

You can join one of our apprenticeship programs at a number of locations across the UK, starting in August or September each year. Wherever you learn, you will complete the same tasks regardless of your fleet’s vehicle profile - giving you the same opportunities as all other candidates.

How The Apprenticeship Works

Stagecoach Engineering apprenticeships programs span four years, and are structured to provide comprehensive learning and skill development. The first three years involve practical learning at our bus depots, working alongside skilled technicians and using the latest diagnostic technology.

Year 1

  • A full overview of all vehicle systems, including Health and Safety, tools & equipment, inspections, wheels & tyres, braking principles, steering & suspension, engines, electrical principles, air & fuel, cooling & lubrication, and transmission & drivelines.

Year 2

  • A deeper, more focused learning of electrical systems, body electrics, transmission and drivelines, and being able to remove & replace components.

Year 3

  • Advanced body & electrical diagnostics, engine diagnostics, chassis diagnostics, transmission diagnostics, vehicle & component inspections, diagnosing & repairing components.

Alongside practical, hands-on learning, you will also attend a specialised training college. Here, you'll work towards achieving either the Bus and Coach Engineering Technician Standard in England and Wales or the Modern Apprenticeship in Bus and Coach Engineering Maintenance in Scotland.

The fourth and final year is a bespoke, award-winning program crafted by Stagecoach UK Bus, endorsed and certified by the Institute of the Motor Industry. You will be paired with an experienced mentor to provide guidance and support as you consolidate your technical skills.

Upon successful completion, you will be eligible for membership at the Society of Operations Engineers, further enriching your professional journey.

The Benefits You Can Expect

Many of our Stagecoach Engineering Directors and Managers began their careers as apprentices - and this could well be your career trajectory in the near future.
