Job summary

Legal & General seeks an experienced Engineering Manager to lead a high-performing team delivering secure, scalable software solutions. You will stay hands-on in delivery while shaping technical direction and collaborating with product and architecture teams to create value for customers.

You will mentor engineers, drive quality and security, and own delivery metrics to improve performance and resilience across our modern software platforms.

Qualifications

• Significant hands-on Java engineering experience with Spring Boot microservices.
• Strong knowledge of modern software architecture, including domain-driven and event-driven design.
• Proven track record leading engineering teams and coaching people.
• Excellent test-driven development and automated testing practices.

Job Description

At Legal & General, we're looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to lead and develop a high-performing engineering team while remaining hands-on in the delivery of modern software solutions. You'll work closely with engineering, product, architecture and business stakeholders to deliver secure, scalable and reliable technology solutions that create value for our customers and support our business ambitions.

What you'll be doing:

• Leading and developing a team of engineers to deliver high-quality, secure and reliable software solutions
• Prioritising, planning and overseeing delivery activities to achieve predictable and effective outcomes
• Designing and building scalable, maintainable software while remaining an active hands-on engineer
• Coaching, mentoring and supporting engineers through feedback and structured development plans
• Embedding a culture of quality, testing and security across day-to-day engineering practices
• Driving continuous improvement through delivery metrics, operational insights and observability data
• Managing operational readiness, incident response processes and technical debt to maintain resilient systems
• Collaborating with product, architecture and business stakeholders to remove blockers and deliver customer value

Who we're looking for:

• Significant hands-on Java engineering experience, including building and operating Spring Boot microservices
• Strong understanding of modern software architecture principles, including domain-driven and event-driven design
• Proven experience leading engineering teams and developing people through coaching and mentoring
• Excellent knowledge of test-driven development, quality engineering practices and automated testing approaches
• Experience working with CI/CD practices, modern version control workflows and software delivery pipelines
• Strong understanding of secure software development, operational readiness and observability practices
• Ability to balance technical, commercial and delivery considerations while influencing stakeholders effectively
• Passion for building inclusive, collaborative environments where individuals and teams can perform at their best
