Job description

Based in & around Midlands & London - typically 2-3 days per week in office

At the Helm of Hydrogen Engineering Excellence.

As the Engineering Manager for the North Phase 1 East Coast Hydrogen Pipeline, you will lead the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) phase, playing a pivotal role in advancing the company’s energy transition strategy. You will be accountable for delivering the FEED to the highest standards of schedule, cost, and quality, ensuring the project is well-positioned for future funding opportunities. This role is critical in shaping the technical foundation of a first-of-its-kind hydrogen infrastructure project that supports the UK’s decarbonisation goals.

Operating within the Capital Delivery function, you will act as a central point of collaboration across internal engineering teams, technical suppliers, industry groups, and FEED consultants. You will work closely with Cadent’s independent Engineering Authority to formalise engineering requirements and ensure their integration across the project and wider portfolio.

Why You’ll Love This Role:

As an Engineering Manager you will:

  • Lead Engineering Delivery and Assurance - Drive the successful delivery of engineering activities for the East Coast Hydrogen Project, ensuring alignment with Cadent’s policies, standards, and the Major Project Delivery System. Develop and implement Engineering Management and Assurance Plans, and formalise engineering requirements with Cadent’s Independent Engineering Authority to ensure robust governance and compliance.

  • Oversee Technical Design and Safety - Promote and ensure the safe design of hydrogen infrastructure by identifying and addressing design weaknesses, leading the internal review of technical deliverables, and managing the process safety elements of the project. Ensure all engineering outputs meet safety, quality, and regulatory standards, including CDM 2015 requirements.

  • Manage Engineering Interfaces and Governance - Coordinate engineering deliverables across internal teams, supply chain partners, and consultants. Prepare and present documentation for project milestones and stage gates, lead recommendations for progression, and support governance reviews to ensure engineering readiness and alignment with project objectives.

  • Support Procurement and Risk Management - Lead the development of engineering scopes for key contracts, including future EPC contracts. Collaborate with project management to align engineering with commercial, schedule, and risk considerations. Manage technical risks throughout the project lifecycle and ensure mitigation strategies are implemented effectively through the supply chain.
  • Drive Collaboration, Innovation, and Industry Engagement -Foster strong relationships with stakeholders across the East Coast value chain and contribute to industry forums to advance hydrogen engineering knowledge. Provide technical support to other hydrogen projects within Cadent, champion continuous improvement, and ensure engineering decisions are grounded in sound technical judgment
What You Will Bring:
  • Engineering Expertise in High-Risk Industries - Proven engineering experience in gas transmission, oil and gas, or petrochemical environments, with a strong commitment to process safety and experience managing multidisciplinary teams across project phases including operational support, front-end loading, construction, and commissioning.

  • Technical Knowledge of Pipeline Standards - In-depth understanding of UK and international pipeline design and material standards such as IGEM, GIS, API, ASME, ISO, and ASTM, with additional knowledge of UK Gas Industry and Safety Regulations and CDM 2015 considered advantageous.

  • Project and Team Leadership - Demonstrated ability to lead engineering teams and consultants, particularly in pipeline and process plant projects, with experience in delivering complex engineering scopes and coordinating across disciplines.

  • Commercial and Contract Management - Experience in the commercial and contractual management of suppliers, ensuring alignment with project objectives, budgets, and timelines.

  • Sector-Specific and Emerging Technology Experience - Familiarity with the UK gas distribution network (GDN) design and standards, and desirable experience in hydrogen or sour gas systems, contributing to innovation and future-ready infrastructure development.
