Job description

We are building a world-class omni-channel experience, powered by innovative, scalable technology. Our tech function is investing in tools, platforms, and capabilities to help customers meet their wellness goals with greater speed, convenience, and personalisation—online and in-store.

About the Role:

We're looking for an experienced and passionate Engineering Manager to lead our Space & Range teams – high-performing squads delivering cutting-edge software solutions for the core commercial applications that power our retail operations.

Your immediate focus will be on applications that help our planners design and visualise store layouts using 3D planograms – essential tools shaping how our products appear on shelves across all locations.

In this role, you'll take full ownership of team delivery, technical strategy, and people development. You'll work closely with Product and Tech leadership to shape the future of our retail systems and ensure we remain at the forefront of innovation in space planning.

What You'll Be Doing:
Technical Leadership
  • Drive the evolution of the team's technical platform, ensuring it's scalable, reliable, and aligned with H&B's wider tech vision.
  • Lead architecture, implementation, and code reviews, focusing on distributed systems and modern engineering practices.
  • Stay ahead of industry trends, championing continuous improvement in tools, processes, and standards.
  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of engineers and/or engineering managers, supporting their career development and fostering a culture of ownership and excellence.
  • Attract, retain, and nurture top engineering talent.
  • Promote a culture of quality, innovation, and alignment with our EPIC values (Energetic, Pioneering, Inclusive, Committed).
Software Delivery
  • Partner with Product Managers and Technical Program Managers to deliver clear roadmaps and measurable outcomes.
  • Lead team-level planning, balancing feature delivery, tech debt management, support, and process improvements.
  • Ensure strong testing practices and modern CI/CD pipelines underpin all releases.
  • Build strong relationships across engineering and product teams as a key technical leader.
  • Clearly communicate progress, risks, and plans to stakeholders.
  • Foster cross-squad collaboration to deliver seamless, integrated solutions.
Key Requirements:
Experience & Technical Skills
  • 3+ years managing engineering teams (typically 8+ engineers), with a proven track record of delivering impactful software solutions at scale.
  • Deep experience with microservices architecture, containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes), and cloud-native patterns.
  • Agile/Scrum experience with a DevOps mindset.
  • Solid understanding of CI/CD, automated testing, and deployment pipelines.
  • Familiarity with both SQL and NoSQL databases.
  • A pragmatic problem-solver with strong analytical skills.
Leadership Qualities
  • Inspirational leader with a coaching mindset and a passion for helping others grow.
  • Customer-first thinking with a focus on value and outcomes.
  • Comfortable switching between strategic thinking and hands-on delivery.
  • Confident navigating change and ambiguity in fast-moving environments.

Join us on our journey to build smarter retail systems and deliver real impact across our business. If you're ready to shape the future of how we plan and present our products in-store, we'd love to hear from you.

What we offer:
  • Pension company contribution = 3%
  • Incentive scheme up to 10% of annual salary, based on company performance.
  • Your wellbeing is paramount so you can get away and take 33 Days Holiday per year.
  • Private Medical Care (Self after 1 year)
  • Learning and Development opportunity with Holland & Barrett for long-term career growth.
