Job description

The Engineering Manager will be responsible for ensuring that the business continues to respond rapidly and to the high technical and quality standards we have established over recent years. You will lead the engineering team to deliver technical solutions to our customers pro-actively and quickly from initial enquiry, providing in depth and responsive design and engineering input, all the way through to delivery and ongoing support. You will be responsible for ensuring that our engineering team and processes are efficient and working as effectively as possible, and lead the development of new products and processes in order to keep us ahead of the competition.

You should be a highly capable, confident individual who has a good understanding of the requirements of the motorsport industry, adaptability towards other industries, and a non-compromising approach to delivering a high-quality product to all customers. You will also bring with you a wealth of experience in managing and developing teams, allowing them to achieve their full potential. A positive, pro-active approach is critical, as is the ability to work to rapidly changing requirements under extremely tight timescales.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintaining a flexible, pro-active, agile approach to our motorsport customers and other customers who require a quick-turnaround, whilst working within the requirements of ISO9001 and AS9100 as applicable
  • Working with the commercial team to respond to customer enquiries promptly and accurately, providing technical feedback and costing information, in order to have the very best success of winning new business
  • Taking full ownership of a project’s delivery, being the key technical contact for a given project, and cascading this responsibility down to your team as appropriate
  • Coach, mentor, and develop staff, including overseeing new employee onboarding and providing career development planning and opportunities
  • Empower employees to take responsibility for their jobs and goals. Delegate responsibility and expect accountability and regular feedback
  • Lead employees using aperformance managementand development process that provides an overall context and framework to encourage employee contribution and includes goal setting, feedback, and performance development planning
  • Provide management and mentorship to your team, setting clear objectives and ensuring that development opportunities are provided when applicable
  • Ensure that we are utilising our engineering resource as effectively and efficiently as possible at all times, and work with other leads within the Engineering group to ensure that this works across the whole team
  • Developing our Engineering Processes, including document control, efficiency of our design life cycle, integration with ERP systems (SAP) and supporting development of New Product Introduction procedures
  • Ensuring that drawing, BOM and BOP requirements are clear and make it to the shop floor with all jobs, with total clarity of revision history
  • Liaising with all key functions within the business to ensure that Engineering projects are delivered to spec, on time and to the right quality
  • Constructively working with suppliers in order to meet the needs of a project or business as a whole
  • Understanding all key processes within the business, and being instrumental in developing new technologies to keep us ahead of our competition
  • Work closely with the Production Managers and Production Engineers to ensure that Continuous Improvements activities take place throughout the business
  • Ensuring appropriate risk assessments are in place for all processes developed by the engineering team
  • Get hands on with processes, to understand how they work and where shortcomings may be for yourself

Personal Specification

  • A degree qualified engineer with experience gained ideally within the motorsport or automotive sector
  • A background in Technical Project Management, Co-ordination or Project Engineering would be desirable
  • Experience of managing teams of Engineers and the ability to identify and nurture talent within the team
  • Clear open two-way communication skills, with an approachable, positive and pro-active attitude at all times
  • Methodical approach to problem solving, with excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to work on own initiative
  • Flexibility and willing to learn new skills
  • Technical, hands-on approach with a good understanding of the commercial implications and requirements of any given project
  • PC Literate and able to use or quickly learn SolidWorks, SAP Business One, and Adept
  • Ability to manage up multiple engineers within your team, with potential for this to expand as the demands develop over time
  • Enthusiastic and flexible in performing a wide range of tasks within and sometimes outside of their standard job description
  • Experience of developing, designing and manufacturing with composite materials would be advantageous
