Location: Remote first; with fortnightly to monthly face-to-face meetings in Gloucester, occasionally in Liverpool, London, and Romania

As one of the largest insurance groups in the world and the fifth largest employee-owned business in the UK, we manage premiums on behalf of millions of clients across a wide range of product offerings. Our development team works on solutions that innovate and prioritize user needs.

Role

As an Engineering Manager at Howden, you will lead two agile teams. You will utilize your people-first approach and agile coaching to help our teams grow and achieve high performance.

You will participate in regular agile sessions, collaborating closely with your team to deliver our roadmap. You will support each engineer (typically around 10 direct reports) in their growth, resilience, problem-solving, and training needs, while promoting best practices.

This role is suited for technical people leaders; no direct coding is required.

As part of our leadership team and reporting to the Head of Web Development, you will facilitate leadership and community of practice sessions in disciplines such as UI/UX or QA, foster cross-team collaboration, and support hiring across the group.

About you:

  • A strong understanding of the broader technological landscape.
  • Proven people leadership skills and the ability to motivate and measure team performance.
  • Attention to detail and a focus on user-centric design.
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards and requirements.
  • Experience with Test-driven Development and group programming activities.
  • Strong understanding of Azure Cloud technologies.
  • Excellent communication skills and openness to feedback.
  • A bias toward action and a scientific, data-driven decision-making approach.
  • Familiarity with agile methodologies, especially Scrum and Kanban.
  • Experience with continuous delivery practices and iterative development (CI/CD).
  • Focus on observability and monitoring capabilities.
  • Previous experience in people leadership and agile coaching.

Rewards:

We believe great work deserves recognition, which is why we offer:

  • 25 days holiday (plus bank holidays), pro-rated for part-year service.
  • Core benefits focused on health and financial protection, including:
    • Life Assurance up to 4x salary.
    • Income protection for up to 5 years in case of illness or injury.
    • Contributory pension scheme: 4% employer and 5% employee contributions, increasing to 5% & 5% in April 2025.
    • Access to a Healthcare Cashplan for health-related benefits.

Additional lifestyle and financial benefits include:

  • Discounts on gym memberships across the UK.
  • Salary sacrifice schemes for Travel Insurance, Cycle to Work, Car leasing, and Technology purchases.
  • Discounted personal health policies (Critical illness, private medical, dental).
  • Insurance products (home, motor, travel, and specialist vehicles) available commission-free.
  • Discounts at high-street retailers.
  • Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) for support outside of work.
