About the role

NFU Mutual’s Head Office Underwriting Department offers an opportunity for an experienced professional to join as an Engineering Insurance Underwriter on a 12-month Fixed Term Contract to support the company’s growth. The role may become permanent for the right candidate, but this is not guaranteed.

This is a great time to join us as we expand our commercial customer offerings, building trust and long-lasting relationships as a mutual organization. The Underwriter will recommend and develop underwriting strategies for our Engineering Insurance products, establishing rules, terms, and risk features to meet profit and growth objectives while managing insurance risk in line with our overall strategy.

You will collaborate with our Propositions department and other stakeholders to set growth targets and define our risk appetite. Key responsibilities include:

  • Translating underwriting appetite into operational rules, processes, and communications for NFU Mutual Agents and Underwriters to execute risk strategies effectively.
  • Reviewing and providing expert judgment on risk rates to ensure they are informed by deep insurance and market knowledge.
  • Analyzing management information to identify opportunities for improving underwriting strategies and meeting business requirements.

Please note that the role is internally known as Class Underwriter – Line of Business.

About you

We seek a professional with extensive underwriting or broking experience in Engineering Breakdown Insurance. You should be technically proficient, with strong communication skills and the ability to build impactful relationships. Proactivity, initiative, and a continuous improvement mindset are essential.

Additionally, we are looking for:

  • Experience in a head office function, demonstrating strategic thinking and project management skills.
  • Strong knowledge of the Engineering Insurance market and its performance factors.
  • Negotiation, influencing skills, and experience working with diverse stakeholders.
  • Effective communication skills suitable for different audiences.
  • High data literacy with the ability to translate data into actionable insights.

An ACII qualification is advantageous but not essential.
