Job Description for Engineering Design Manager:

The Engineering Design Manager will oversee the delivery of engineering design scope within the UKNNL Central Laboratory, from feasibility to design support during commissioning and operational phases. This position provides an opportunity to manage multiple projects of national importance to the UK nuclear industry. The role can be based at Sellafield or Risley.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Ensure design standards and practices are properly applied, ensuring safety, legality, and compliance with UKNNL’s Design Process.
  • Discharge duties of the CDM Principal Designer.
  • Engage subject matter experts effectively and utilize their input.
  • Ensure solutions meet performance demands, preserve design intent, and align with plant configuration.
  • Generate necessary documentation for safety, legal compliance, installation, commissioning, and operation.
  • Provide leadership and support to multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Build strong relationships with stakeholders within Engineering and UKNNL.
  • Support continuous improvement activities within Engineering.

Project Management Responsibilities:

  • Deliver and control work portfolio to meet specifications, costs, and schedules.
  • Ensure design solutions are fit for purpose, integrated, affordable, and align with business cases and specifications.
  • Identify, own, and manage technical, safety, and engineering risks.
  • Report on work status and performance accurately.
  • Assign appropriate SQEP design resources to projects.

Essential Criteria:

  • HNC in Engineering.
  • Incorporated Engineer membership.
  • Significant experience in a regulated, quality-assured engineering management role.
  • Ability to obtain SC security clearance.

Desirable Criteria:

  • MEng (Hons) qualification.
  • Chartered Engineer membership or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in the nuclear industry, preferably at Sellafield.
