Job summary

Arriva UK Bus in Selby is seeking an Engineering Chargehand to provide day-to-day supervision and technical leadership in our busy Selby workshop.

You will drive workshop performance, allocate workloads, guide engineers and apprentices, ensure DVSA MOT standards are met, and deputise for senior managers when needed. You will foster a safe, compliant, and efficient working environment with a strong focus on first-time quality.

Qualifications

• NVQ Level 3 / City & Guilds in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair.
• Proven PSV mechanic background with strong diagnostic capabilities.
• Strong knowledge of DVSA standards and vehicle inspection manuals.
• Supervisory or team-lead experience within a workshop environment preferred.
• IRTEC accreditation and PCV Category D licence desirable.

Responsibilities

• Allocating and prioritising daily workloads to ensure maintenance, inspections and defect repairs are completed safely and efficiently.
• Providing hands-on supervisory and technical direction to engineers, technicians and apprentices on the workshop floor.
• Inspecting, diagnosing, maintaining and repairing the depot fleet to meet DVSA MOT standards.
• Leading by example on technical standards and tackling complex faults.
• Conducting quality control checks to ensure repairs are safe, reliable and compliant with Arriva standards.
• Liaising with the operations team to communicate vehicle availability and minimise downtime.
• Deputising for the Engineering Manager or Assistant Engineering Manager during absences or out-of-hours shifts.

Are you a skilled PSV mechanic with a knack for leadership? We are looking for Engineering Chargehands to provide day‑to‑day technical supervision and support within our busy Selby workshop.

In this critical role, you will act as the key link between engineering management and the engineering team, driving workshop performance, fleet availability, and first‑time quality repairs and first‑time fixes.

What you will be doing:

• Allocating and prioritising daily workloads to ensure scheduled maintenance, inspections, and defect repairs are completed safely and efficiently.
• Providing hands‑on supervisory and technical direction to engineers, technicians, and apprentices on the workshop floor.
• Actively participating in the inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of the depot fleet, ensuring vehicles are prepared to DVSA MOT standards.
• Leading by example on technical standards, tackling complex mechanical, electrical, and diagnostic fault‑finding.
• Conducting quality control checks to ensure all repairs are safe, reliable, and compliant with Arriva engineering standards.
• Liaising directly with the operations team to communicate vehicle availability and minimise downtime.
• Deputising for the Engineering Manager or Assistant Engineering Manager during absences or out‑of‑hours shifts.

Working Hours:

• The role operates on a depot shift pattern, which includes AM/PM shifts and rostered rest days with some weekend working too.

What you need to bring to the team:

• Essential: A minimum NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, or equivalent qualification in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair.
• Essential: A proven background as a skilled PSV mechanic with strong diagnostic capabilities.
• Essential: A strong understanding of DVSA standards, operator licence requirements, and vehicle inspection manuals.
• Desirable: Previous supervisory or team‑leading experience within a commercial workshop environment.
• Desirable: Active IRTEC accreditation and a valid PCV Category D driving licence.
