Job summary

Arriva Group at Hemel Hempstead depot is seeking an experienced Engineering Chargehand to lead a team of technicians, ensuring PCV/HGV vehicles are maintained to DVSA standards and safety procedures are followed. You will combine hands-on engineering with people leadership, drive safety, quality, and performance, and support apprentice development on a full-time basis.

Qualifications

• NVQ Level 3 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair required.
• Experience in a Chargehand, Supervisory or Senior Technician role.
• Knowledge of PCV or HGV mechanical systems and strong communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead, support, and motivate a team of engineers and fitters.
• Carry out diagnostics, inspections, and repairs on PCV vehicles.
• Allocate work and monitor safety, quality, and service targets.
• Ensure DVSA, Health & Safety, and Arriva standards compliance.
• Maintain accurate maintenance records and depot systems.
• Support the Engineering Manager with training and apprentice development.

This is a key leadership position, combining hands‑on engineering expertise with responsibility for supporting, guiding, and developing a skilled team of technicians, ensuring our fleet remains safe, compliant, and fully serviceable.

The Role

You will play a vital role in the day‑to‑day performance of the depot by leading engineering activity and ensuring all maintenance and repair work is completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Leading, supporting, and motivating a team of engineers and fitters
• Carrying out diagnostics, inspections, and repairs on PCV vehicles
• Allocating work and monitoring performance against safety, quality, and service targets
• Ensuring full compliance with DVSA, Health & Safety, and Arriva standards
• Maintaining accurate maintenance records and depot systems
• Supporting the Engineering Manager with training, mentoring, and apprentice development

What We’re Looking For

• NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair
• Previous experience in a Chargehand, Supervisory, or Senior Technician role
• Strong knowledge of PCV or HGV mechanical systems
• Confident communicator with proven leadership capability
• Flexible approach to working hours, including early, late, and weekend shifts
• PCV license desirable, but not essential
