Summary of the Position :

We are seeking an Engineering Assistant to join our team at One Federal Street, Boston. The role involves operating, maintaining, and repairing facility equipment across all systems. The ideal candidate will demonstrate technical expertise in at least one craft area (Electrical, HVAC, Piping/Plumbing, Fire/Life Safety) and be skilled in others. The Engineering Assistant ensures health and safety standards are met while creating a welcoming environment for tenants, visitors, and the community. Candidates must be current members of Chapter 3, National Conference of Firemen and Oilers 32BJ, SEIU, or must join within 30 days of hire.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Operate the facility safely, adhering to all regulations.
  • Identify and assess safety hazards and risks.
  • Record readings and adjust equipment for proper operation.
  • Review service request summaries to address recurrent issues.
  • Participate in incident investigations.
  • Perform maintenance and monitoring of mechanical, plumbing, structural, control, and fire/life safety systems.
  • Maintain HVAC systems to optimal levels.
  • Respond professionally to tenant inquiries.
  • Assist with emergency situations, taking appropriate actions.
  • Follow policies for hazardous materials handling.
  • Maintain a clean and safe workspace.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills & Qualifications :

  • Commitment to health and safety standards and creating a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Ability to use proper PPE and follow safety policies.
  • Thorough knowledge of building systems and operating strategies.
  • Aptitude for mechanical systems and computer-controlled equipment.

Education / Experience & Certifications / Licenses :

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least two years of college or related trade schooling.
  • Minimum four years’ experience in HVAC central plant operations.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office.

Physical Requirements :

  • On-site presence required; shift to be determined, weekend availability expected.
  • Ability to travel within the building, including climbing, bending, lifting (up to 50 lbs), and working at heights and in confined spaces following OSHA guidelines.
  • Vision abilities include close, distance, color, and depth perception.
  • Must stand for extended periods and wear PPE as required.

Work Environment :

Exposure to moving mechanical parts, building equipment, and tools. Occasionally exposed to wet conditions, heights, chemicals, weather, and electrical hazards. Noise level is moderate to loud. Knowledge of safety protocols is essential.

This role is compensated at union-negotiated rates, with eligibility for bonuses, comprehensive benefits, 401(k) with matching, wellness programs, and other full-time employee benefits.

Base wages depend on experience, skills, and licensure, specific to the Chapter 3 NCFO 32BJ, SEIU contract.
