Job description

Job Title: Engineer - Materials Technology (Metallurgy)

Location: Barrow-in-Furness. This is an onsite position

Salary: £35,802 + depending on skills and experience during

What you'll be doing:

  • Provide support in delivering authoritative metallurgical advice and guidance across all functions-particularly Operations, Engineering, and Supply Chain-on emerging issues submarine build and commissioning
  • Extend metallurgical support to the broader BAES community, including facilities/infrastructure, Naval Ships, and Global Combat Systems
  • Assist Submarine design engineering teams by advising on appropriate materials, processes, and corrosion management strategies
  • Participate in the review and upkeep of Process Instructions, Workmanship Standards, Operating Procedures, and Risk Assessments
  • Assist in conducting and reporting metallurgical investigations and research, including sample preparation, laboratory analysis, and the production of technical reports
  • Contribute to the evaluation of new materials and innovative manufacturing processes
  • Aid weld engineers in assessing pipe welds, structural welds, and cladding through sample preparation and mechanical testing
  • Support the review of supplier technical capabilities and special processes related to metallurgy, corrosion prevention, and welding engineering

Your skills and experiences:

Essential

  • Holds a degree (BEng/BSc) in Metallurgy or Materials Science, or an equivalent vocational qualification
  • Familiar with both ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgical principles
  • Experience in metal forming and processing techniques
  • Capable of effectively communicating with a range of stakeholders

Desirable

  • Hands-on experience within workshop settings, including metallurgical testing
  • Experience of heavy industrial processes

The Materials Technology in build support team:

As an Engineer, you will be part of a team that is working on technology management to develop material solutions for existing engineering problems within submarine projects. We offer relocation support packages across all Submarines roles, subject to meeting eligibility criteria.
