Job summary

RNLI in Poole is seeking an experienced Senior Engineer to join the Engineering Transformation team. You will lead and support asset lifecycle activities for lifeboats, launch and recovery systems, and related equipment, with a mechanical engineering emphasis and exposure to marine environments.

You will collaborate across engineering, production and procurement, mentoring colleagues and ensuring safety, reliability and cost-effective solutions.

Qualifications

• A degree, HND or equivalent in mechanical/marine engineering.
• At least five years of relevant engineering experience.
• Strong mechanical design, integration and through-life support capabilities.
• Ability to produce/review drawings, CAD models, specs and reports.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design, development, integration and improvement of mechanical systems, structures and equipment for lifeboats, other marine assets, and launch and recovery systems.
• Produce, review and approve engineering information, including calculations, CAD models, drawings, specifications, reports, test plans and manufacturing or installation instructions.
• Lead and assure mechanical design, technical investigations and root-cause analysis, developing remedial solutions.
• Plan and support manufacture, installation, inspection, testing, harbour trials and sea trials, with production teams and contractors.
• Assess and manage engineering risk ensuring safety, reliability and whole-life cost.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary technical work to quality, cost and timescale, mentoring and communicating decisions to stakeholders.

Job description

We're seeking an experienced Senior Engineer, with at least five years of relevant engineering experience, to join our Engineering Transformation team. The team leads the delivery of major asset engineering programmes, including new and upgraded lifeboats, launch and recovery systems, and the equipment that enables our crews to operate safely and effectively. You will primarily come from a mechanical engineering background, although we also welcome applicants with broader marine, naval, structural, systems or product-development experience. Ideally, you will understand lifeboats, search and rescue craft, workboats or other small marine vessels, together with the launch and recovery equipment, shore infrastructure or operational systems that support them. In this role, you'll lead and support engineering work across the full asset lifecycle, from requirements, concept development and detailed design through manufacture, installation, trials, introduction into service and through-life support. You'll work closely with engineering, production, procurement, maintenance, operational colleagues, volunteers, suppliers and contractors., As a Senior Engineer, you'll lead and support engineering work across the full asset lifecycle. You'll provide practical leadership across the team and work closely with engineering, production, procurement, maintenance, operational colleagues, volunteers, suppliers and contractors.

• Lead the design, development, integration and improvement of mechanical systems, structures and equipment for lifeboats, other marine assets, and launch and recovery systems, translating operational needs into clear requirements and practical solutions.


• Produce, review and approve engineering information, including calculations, CAD models, drawings, specifications, reports, test plans and manufacturing or installation instructions.


• Lead and assure mechanical design, technical investigations, defect assessments and root-cause analysis, developing proportionate remedial solutions.


• Plan and support manufacture, installation, inspection, testing, harbour trials and sea trials, working with production teams, operators, maintainers, suppliers and contractors to resolve technical issues.


• Assess and manage engineering risk, ensuring safety, reliability, human factors, maintainability, whole-life cost, compliance, configuration control and technical acceptance are addressed.


• Coordinate multidisciplinary technical work to agreed quality, cost and timescale, providing guidance and mentoring and communicating engineering decisions clearly to stakeholders.
  This is not an operational seagoing position, however due to the nature of the role, it is highly desirable, but not essential, that the post holder be operationally seagoing and as such capable of going afloat in all sea conditions.

Location description

Hybrid working arrangement between home and Poole, with a minimum of 3 days per week in Poole, You'll be an experienced, practical engineer with sound engineering judgement and the ability to turn complex operational needs into safe, practical, maintainable and cost-effective solutions that deliver dependable lifesaving capability.

• A degree, HND or equivalent qualification or professional experience in mechanical, marine or a related engineering discipline.


• At least five years' relevant experience delivering technically complex engineering work, with strong mechanical design, integration, assessment or through-life support capability.


• Experience using engineering calculations and analysis to develop safe, practical solutions and producing or reviewing drawings, CAD models, specifications, reports and test or acceptance documentation.


• Sound engineering judgement, including investigating technical problems, evaluating evidence, managing risk and understanding impacts across manufacture, installation, operation, maintenance, reliability and whole-life cost.


• Strong collaboration, communication and attention to detail, with the confidence to explain technical recommendations, work across multidisciplinary teams and suppliers, and support others' development.

Experience in one or more of the following would be advantageous, but is not essential:

• Small commercial, military or search and rescue vessels, including their machinery, propulsion, steering, hydraulics, deck equipment and mechanical system integration.


• Marine launch and recovery systems, such as slipways, davits, cranes, winches, trailers, carriage systems or amphibious equipment.


• Operational engineering, trials, commissioning, technical acceptance or in-service support in marine or other safety-critical environments.


• Maritime legislation, classification and assurance, engineering change, configuration management, risk assessment, design review, CAD or engineering analysis tools.

• Other organisations may describe this position as Senior Mechanical Engineer, Senior Marine Engineer, Senior Design Engineer, Marine Systems Engineer, Lead Project Engineer or Senior Product Development Engineer.
