Job summary

Salford City Council in Salford is recruiting an Engineer to grow as a technical expert and manager within our highways and public realm projects. You will contribute to feasibility studies, conceptual and detailed design, and oversee construction with a focus on quality, safety and environment.

The role offers hybrid/flexible working, exposure to a broad pipeline of schemes including SuDS engineering, and strong mentoring from an experienced team as you progress with professional development

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or an equivalent accredited qualification.
  • Strong communication and leadership abilities relevant to engineering projects.
  • Experience in design, implementation and supervision of civil engineering schemes.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with feasibility studies, conceptual and detailed design, and procurement.
  • Coordinate with clients, stakeholders and external consultants.
  • Supervise on-site construction works and site safety procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with quality, health & safety and environmental standards.
  • Prepare tender schemes using NEC4 ECC forms and related contract documents.
  • Set and manage personal targets to meet programme requirements.

Your role

You will be tasked with assisting in managing, and taking a significant role yourself, in the undertaking of feasibility studies, conceptual, preliminary and detailed design, procurement and monitoring of the construction of a range of engineering projects. We want you to:

  • Manage the work of Assistant Engineers, Technicians, temporary and seconded staff, and external consultants.
  • Assist with preparing schemes for tender using NEC4 ECC Forms of Contract, the Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works, the Specification for Highway Works and the Standard Method of Measurement.
  • Liaise effectively with clients, stakeholders, elected members and the public on projects.
  • Supervise construction works on site.
  • Contribute to implementing projects to meet the requirements of quality, health & safety and environmental standards.
  • Ensure compliance with a high regard to Health and Safety and the application of the CDM Regulations and other related legislation.
  • Set and work to personal targets to meet programme requirements and client needs.
Your profile
  • Possess, or be working towards, a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, or a related subject accredited by the Engineering Council, or possess a Higher National Certificate/Diploma in Civil Engineering or a related subject.
  • Proven experience in the design, implementation and supervision of engineering projects.
  • The ability to deal appropriately and effectively with external organisations, statutory bodies and clients.
  • The ability to undertake feasibility studies including preparing reports, cost estimates, investigating problems, and identifying options.
  • Working knowledge of relevant legislation and guidelines including the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges, British and European Standards, Eurocodes and Codes of Practice.
  • Commercial awareness to support in the preparation of NEC4 ECC Forms of Contract for civil engineering works.
  • Initiative and ingenuity in solving engineering problems.
  • Good communication skills, both orally and in writing, both at a general and technical level.
  • At least working capability with AutoCAD software and a desire to enhance your skills.
  • Full UK driving licence.
