The successful candidate will handle both contentious and non-contentious matters, including TUPE, settlements and restructures, while working closely with HR and senior managers.

Responsibilities

• Manage employment tribunal claims, coordinating with external counsel as needed.
• Support HR and senior managers with practical guidance on complex people issues.
• Identify and manage legal risk and escalate where appropriate.
• Keep up to date with changes in employment law and their impact on the organisation.

About the role

Our client is a local authority in Greater Manchester. They are looking for an Employment Lawyer to join their legal team on a locum basis, providing practical employment law support across the organisation.

You will advise on a broad range of workforce matters, supporting HR colleagues and senior managers with clear, well-reasoned guidance. The work includes individual and collective employment issues, and you will play an active part in managing risk and handling cases from first advice through to resolution.

The role is based in Stretford and suits an experienced employment lawyer who is comfortable working in a public sector setting. You will need to manage your own caseload, communicate clearly with non-lawyers and deliver reliable advice from the outset.

Main responsibilities

• Provide advice on employment law matters, including disciplinary, grievance, capability and absence management
• Support organisational change, restructures, redundancy processes and TUPE transfers
• Advise on contracts of employment, settlement agreements and workforce policies
• Manage employment tribunal claims, working with external counsel where required
• Support HR and senior managers with practical guidance on complex people issues
• Identify and manage legal risk, escalating matters where appropriate
• Keep up to date with changes in employment law and their impact on the organisation

Requirements

• Qualified solicitor, barrister or equivalent legal qualification in England and Wales
• Proven experience advising on contentious and non-contentious employment law matters
• Experience handling employment tribunal claims
• Sound knowledge of TUPE, redundancy and settlement agreements
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to advise HR and managers clearly
• Able to manage a caseload independently and work to deadlines
