Job summary

A leading education provider in the UK is looking for a part-time Employability and Functional Skills Tutor. In this role, you will teach essential skills to 16-18-year-olds, adults, and apprentices, delivering both face-to-face and remote sessions. The ideal candidate will have a Level 5 Teaching Qualification (or be completing it) and experience in teaching employability skills. You will engage learners through tailored sessions, support their success, and contribute to curriculum development in a dynamic environment.

  • Level 5 Teaching Qualification or completing within 3 years of employment.

Overview

Employability and Functional Skills Tutor – Part Time 22.2 hours per week. This role will work across Colchester and Braintree campuses.

Role purpose - Teach Functional Skills and Employability programmes to 16-18-year-olds, adults, and apprentices, and help drive outstanding outcomes. Deliver Employability Skills qualifications and Functional Skills in Maths and English at Levels 1 and 2, both face-to-face and remotely.

About the role

  • Deliver engaging, high-impact learning and assessment tailored to individual needs across both Employability and Functional Skills qualifications.
  • Support learners aged 16-18 and 19+ through dynamic sessions in the classroom or online.
  • Identify learner starting points via initial assessments and create effective individual learning plans in collaboration with apprentices and employers.
  • Collaborate with support staff and teaching teams to ensure learning objectives are achieved.
  • Monitor attendance, track progress, and support learner success in liaison with Area Heads and colleagues.
  • Plan and deliver learning activities that address student needs and curriculum goals; manage assessments and maintain accurate records.
  • Provide clear, timely feedback and maintain assessment records in line with College policy.
  • Contribute to curriculum development using online platforms and promote the use of digital tools by apprentices.
  • Record and monitor learner progress through individual learning plans and course management systems.
  • Offer pastoral support to vulnerable or low-motivation learners, using behaviour management strategies to create a respectful environment.
  • Participate in cross-college quality assurance and standardisation activities to raise teaching and learning standards.

Essential Qualifications

  • Minimum of Level 2 qualification in English and Mathematics GCSE (4+ or C and above; or equivalent).
  • Level 5 Teaching Qualification or completing within 3 years of employment.

Essential Experience

  • Experience of teaching employability skills.
  • Experience of working across departments and communicating progress effectively.
  • Experience of working with a wide range of apprentices at different levels.
