Job description

Emergency Duty Team
Qualified Social Worker
Location: Greater Manchester
Pay rate: £40 per hour

We are seeking experienced and passionate Qualified Social Workers to join the dedicated Emergency Duty Team (EDT) in the North West. Candidates must have Approved Mental Health Practitioner (AMHP) experience. In this role, you will provide a responsive, emergency social work service outside of office hours across the local authority. The team offers social work assistance on an emergency basis to vulnerable individuals, including families at risk, people with disabilities, and those with acute mental health issues, including acting as an AMHP.

You will deliver the Council’s statutory emergency response outside of office hours, including weekends and bank holidays, handling complex situations. Responsibilities include assessing adults in need of mental health evaluation, safeguarding, and emergency social care intervention.

The successful candidate will ensure the safe delivery of social care, manage safeguarding risks effectively, and work within a multi-agency environment to provide high-quality social work services. The approach should be holistic and person-centred, keeping customers and families central to the process.

As an AMHP, you will have the authority to apply for detention under the Mental Health Act and to approve Community Treatment Orders and Guardianship requests. If trained as a Best Interest Assessor (BIA), you can also recommend deprivation of liberty under the Mental Capacity Act.

Ideal candidates will possess:

  • Professional Social Work qualification and registration with Social Work England.
  • AMHP qualification.
  • Post-qualification experience, especially with complex cases.
  • Willingness to undergo an enhanced disclosure check.
  • Availability to work out of hours, including weekends and bank holidays, to provide a 24/7 service.
In this role, you will:
  • Conduct assessments and share outcomes appropriately in an out-of-hours emergency setting.
  • Assess and facilitate hospital admissions or refer to alternative, least restrictive options, liaising with crisis and medical teams.
  • Ensure effective safeguarding interventions, managing investigations, protection planning, and documentation.
  • Apply the Mental Capacity Act effectively, supporting vulnerable individuals and seeking least restrictive options for admission.
  • Engage informal supports, resolve conflicts, and coordinate with statutory, voluntary, and independent services.
  • Produce high-quality, professional documentation in line with policies and deadlines.
This is an agency role, and Pertemps offers:
- Dedicated consultant support
- Easy registration process
- Referral schemes and incentives
- Ongoing compliance management
- Reliable payroll
