Job summary

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an Operational Manager in our Emergency Department to lead day-to-day operations, drive NHS targets, and optimise patient flow to deliver safe, high-quality urgent care.

The role requires strong leadership, strategic thinking and the ability to work across multidisciplinary teams at a major tertiary centre, with flexible hours including occasional weekends.

Qualifications

• Educated to degree level or able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge and experience.
• Postgraduate management qualification or equivalent.
• Experience of managing staff in a complex organisational environment.
• Good understanding of budgetary management, revenue/capital budgets, forecasting and financial monitoring.
• Knowledge of NHS priorities, clinical governance, risk management and health and safety.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to the strategic development of services.
• Support the General Manager with change management and engagement of the multidisciplinary team.
• Lead quality improvement initiatives and projects.
• Ensure achievement of National operational targets (e.g., 4-hour A&E performance, ambulance offload) and efficient patient flow.
