About The Apprenticeship

The apprenticeship lasts 10 months, including 4 weeks of classroom-based study at our Preston base. You will complete assignments and workbooks throughout the program and will be given time to complete your training as required. You will work with our training provider to support your educational journey and help you achieve your potential.

Start date - beginning of September

Shift pattern - Outside of classroom hours, shifts operate on a 4 on, 4 off basis from our sites in Salford or Preston.

The role - Working in partnership with the NHS and other care providers, our caring, compassionate teams of trained Emergency Care Assistants (ECA) and Urgent Care Assistants (UCA) respond to a variety of situations, including medical and trauma emergencies, inter-hospital transfers, and hospital admissions. ECAs work as part of a team with ambulance care assistants and qualified clinicians to provide high-quality, potentially life-saving care and transportation to hospitals.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Drive UKEMS vehicles under emergency, urgent, and normal conditions
  • Complete patient report forms, including police, coroner, and solicitor statements if necessary
  • Ensure safe transfer of patients, utilizing appropriate equipment and manual handling techniques
  • Perform dynamic risk assessments at incident scenes
  • Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, colleagues, emergency services, and healthcare professionals
  • Check and maintain vehicle and equipment, report faults, and complete records
  • Manage medical supplies and clinical waste appropriately
  • Maintain communication with the operations center
  • Respond as a first responder within the scope of practice when necessary

What will you study?

The training includes moving and handling techniques, emergency first aid, and safe driving in emergency and non-emergency situations. You will undertake qualifications including:

  1. Level 3 Certificate in Ambulance Patient Care Services (Urgent Care Services)
  2. Level 3 Certificate in Emergency Response Ambulance Driving (CERAD)
  3. The Care Certificate
  4. Level 2 Safeguarding and other mandatory qualifications as per the CSCF

Suitability

  • You must be able to work shift patterns, including unsociable hours, as the service operates 24/7, 365 days a year. Sometimes, you may need to work beyond your scheduled hours.
  • You should stay calm and work effectively under pressure
  • You must handle sensitive situations assertively and tactfully
  • This role is physically demanding; you must be able to lift approximately 11 stones (70 kg) with a colleague
