What you’ll be doing

Operating as part of the Finance and Accounting Team, within the Tax Centre of Excellence, this role supports the EMEA Head of Tax in providing the Hitachi Group Companies with corporate tax support in the UK and Europe. Sitting within a team of 8 and having one direct report, the Tax Manager is part of a high performing tax team working in a culturally diverse environment.


Key Responsibilities:

1. Tax compliance and reporting

Work with the EMEA Head of Tax in the end-to-end Corporate tax compliance process for Hitachi Europe’s UK, German, Italian, French, and Spanish entities, Polish, Swiss, South African and Turkish branches, and other Hitachi group companies, including:

  • Liaising with external advisors in the preparation of Corporation tax returns for UK and overseas entities / branches

  • Preparing the R&D Tax Credit Claims for Hitachi Europe and other group companies

  • Preparing the tax disclosures in the statutory accounts for Hitachi Europe and other group companies

  • Coordinating with the Hitachi UK companies on matters related to group relief, corporate interest restriction, use of tax losses, overview of the group tax position and monitoring group’s payment position with HMRC,

  • Dealing with requests from tax authorities.

2. Risk management and advisory

  • Support the EMEA Head of Tax on matters related to tax compliance and advisory for Hitachi’s European subsidiaries and branches.

  • Assist with ensuring that appropriate tax controls, procedures and reporting functionality is in place.

  • Assisting in the implementation of finance, tax or transfer pricing specific projects such as Pillar 2 (e.g. registration, safe harbour and detailed ETR calculations where required).

  • Assisting with ad-hoc requests from Hitachi Ltd in Japan e.g. J-CFC

  • Work with the EMEA Head of Tax in dealing with corporate tax and transfer pricing audits and controversies with local tax authorities.

  • Support in carrying out corporate tax process, system reviews and testing including assessment of tax risks.

  • Assist the EMEA Head of Tax with identifying and implementing technology or process improvements in CIT, TP and VAT

3. Team management and development

  • Manage and develop junior tax staff, including:

  • Effectively delegating work to junior staff

  • Review work carried out by junior staff

  • Carry out annual performance reviews.

The role will be a mixture of remote-hybrid work with days in the Hitachi Office. The office location is Hitachi Europe Ltd, Botanica Ditton Park, Riding Court Road, Datchet, SL3 9LL

  • Ability to interact effectively with the finance team, including regional finance managers/directors, corporate tax and transfer pricing colleagues, as well as tax authorities and external advisors.

  • Able to function in a changing environment, act assertively, self-motivated and able to work independently, taking responsibility on delivery with support provided by the Head of Tax where required
