Job summary

Matchtech Group is seeking a Senior Embedded Software Test Engineer in Birmingham (hybrid) with travel to customer sites. You will own testing and validation of embedded software across inverter/motor control, BMS and charging systems, driving safe, production-quality releases.

You will lead test activity from requirements through bench/system validation, mentor juniors, and collaborate with controls, hardware and systems teams while maintaining comprehensive documentation.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in embedded software testing within automotive environments.
• Strong knowledge of embedded C/C++ and firmware testing on bespoke hardware.
• Experience with test lifecycle from requirements to reporting.
• Scripting in Python for test automation and validation.
• Awareness of ISO 26262 functional safety and related processes.
• Ability to create clear test specs, reports and work instructions.
• Hands-on with automotive networks: CAN/CAN-FD, UDS, OBD, J1939.

Responsibilities

• Lead embedded software test delivery to programme timescales.
• Define test strategy, plans and specifications; execute and report results.
• Run bench, HIL, system integration testing and practical validation.
• Debug issues, investigate defects, and support root-cause analysis.
• Validate safety-related behaviour in line with ISO 26262.

Join a leading automotive & electrified powertrain organisation to own testing and validation of embedded software across inverter/motor control, BMS, and charging systems. You'll lead test activity from requirements through to bench/system validation, supporting safe, production-quality releases.

What you'll do

What you'll need

• Strong experience in embedded software testing (OEM / Tier 1 / similar)
• Good knowledge of embedded C/C++ and firmware testing on bespoke hardware
• Test lifecycle experience (requirements → strategy → execution → reporting)
• Scripting / automation using Python (or similar)
• Working understanding of functional safety and ISO 26262
• Comfortable producing clear engineering documentation (test specs, reports, work instructions)
• Automotive networks & diagnostics: CAN/CAN-FD, UDS, OBD, J1939 (FlexRay beneficial)
• Confident communicator with internal and external stakeholders
• Engineering/Science degree (or equivalent experience)

Nice to have

• UML/SysML exposure; model-based tools (e.g., Simulink/TargetLink)
• Experience testing BMS, inverters, DC/DC, onboard chargers
• Automotive SPICE awareness; calibration/diagnostic tool experience
