Job summary

Matchtech is seeking a Senior Embedded Software Test Engineer to own testing and validation of embedded software across inverter, motor control and charging systems. The role is based in Birmingham with hybrid working and travel to customer/test sites as needed.

You will lead test activity from requirements through bench and system validation, ensuring safe, production-quality releases and close collaboration with controls, hardware and systems teams.

Qualifications

Extensive embedded software testing experience in automotive (OEM/Tier 1) environments.
Proficient in embedded C/C++ and firmware testing on bespoke hardware.
Experience with the full test lifecycle from requirements to reporting.
Scripting in Python for test automation.
Knowledge of functional safety and ISO 26262.
Ability to produce clear engineering docs (test specs/reports).
Strong communication with internal and external stakeholders.
Engineering/Science degree or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

Lead embedded software test delivery to programme timescales.
Define test strategy, plans and specifications; execute and report results.
Run bench/HIL/system integration testing and validation.
Debug issues, investigate defects, and support root-cause analysis.
Validate safety-related behaviour per ISO 26262.
Work closely with controls, hardware and systems teams, plus customers/suppliers.
Mentor junior engineers and drive good testing/documentation practice.

Join a leading automotive & electrified powertrain organisation to own testing and validation of embedded software across inverter/motor control, BMS, and charging systems. You'll lead test activity from requirements through to bench/system validation, supporting safe, production-quality releases.

What you'll do

Lead embedded software test delivery to programme timescales
Define test strategy, plans and specifications; execute and report results
Run bench / HIL / system integration testing and practical validation
Debug issues, investigate defects, and support root-cause analysis
Validate safety-related behaviour in line with ISO 26262
Work closely with controls, hardware and systems teams, plus customers/suppliers
Mentor junior engineers and drive good testing/documentation practice

What you'll need

Strong experience in embedded software testing (OEM / Tier 1 / similar)
Good knowledge of embedded C/C++ and firmware testing on bespoke hardware
Test lifecycle experience (requirements → strategy → execution → reporting)
Scripting / automation using Python (or similar)
Working understanding of functional safety and ISO 26262
Comfortable producing clear engineering documentation (test specs, reports, work instructions)
Automotive networks & diagnostics: CAN/CAN-FD, UDS, OBD, J1939 (FlexRay beneficial)
Confident communicator with internal and external stakeholders
Engineering/Science degree (or equivalent experience)
