Embedded Software Engineer - Remote with 4/5 days per month on site in Ulverston

As an Embedded Software Engineer, you'll work in a high-technology business dedicated to reliable underwater imaging and acoustic equipment.

This company serves an international customer base with cutting-edge technology used in various sub-sea applications such as deep-sea infrastructure, renewables, marine life tracking, dive search & recovery, oil & gas, and scientific discovery. They are launching new products, including next-generation sonar systems, worldwide.

The role is based at a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Ulverston, Cumbria, near the Lake District National Park, or remotely with 1 week per month on-site, fully expensed. This location offers a great environment to develop your career in underwater technology.

The role:

  • Develop low-level software for sonar, acoustics, and sensors.
  • Work on bootloader and driver development, real-time signal processing, and embedded Linux configuration (Yocto, PetaLinux) on ARM platforms.
  • Handle all development stages from design to testing and deployment.

Responsibilities include:

  • Developing and optimizing drivers and firmware for acoustic sensors and sonar systems.
  • Configuring Yocto and PetaLinux for real-time applications.
  • Implementing secure boot, OTA updates, and firmware authentication.
  • Working with real-time processing algorithms for sonar and acoustic signals.
  • Developing embedded software in C, C++, and Python.
  • Writing test benches, achieving timing closure, and keeping the team updated on embedded development advancements.

Qualifications:

  • Degree (MEng) in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or related fields.
  • 3+ years in embedded software development, especially in acoustics or sensor systems.
  • Strong experience with ARM processors and low-level programming.
  • Proficiency in C, C++, and Python.
  • Experience with RTOS, signal processing algorithms, secure boot, and Linux kernel development.
