Job description

Flare Bright is a fast-growing software company specialising in Flight Safety and GPS-free Navigation Systems for the Aerospace, Defence, and Urban Air Mobility sectors. With a team of around 30 professionals, we operate from Oxford/Bicester and White City, London. Our culture is professional, flexible, and inclusive, offering excellent benefits and a proven track record of success. This is a rare opportunity to join an expanding, cutting-edge team.

The Role

Reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager, the Electronics Engineer will contribute towards the complete development lifecycle, from concept and PCB design to system integration, testing and troubleshooting. You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to deliver high-performance flight safety and navigation solutions, maintaining excellence through thorough design documentation and technical reports.

Responsibilities
  • Design Unnamed Aerial Systems sensor, communications and control electronics, covering the full lifecycle: concept, hardware selection, schematic/PCB design, final system integration and design for manufacture.
  • Follow and improve engineering processes, design methodologies, and ECAD libraries to increase development efficiency and product quality.
  • Independently define and run rigorous tests of individual and integrated electronics systems.
  • Must be able to produce comprehensive, high-quality documentation. This specifically includes well-articulated design documentation and test reports.
  • Troubleshoot electronics-based and low level communications issues using lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, load generators and multimeters.
  • Collaborate effectively with fellow engineers and technicians to achieve and deliver complete, operational solutions.
  • Evaluate and select components considering cost, interfaces, lead times, and long-term availability to mitigate supply chain risks.
  • Engage with customers to translate key user requirements to design requirements and to support customer integration and project engagements.
Requirements
  • Comfortable working within the defence industry. A Baseline Personnel Security Standard check will be undertaken before an offer is made, and you must be willing and eligible for (or already have) at least UK SC clearance. References will be checked.
  • BEng degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering [2.1 or Higher].
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience focused on the design, testing, and troubleshooting of power and sensor board designs.
  • Proficiency in interpreting and manipulating schematics, wiring diagrams, PCB layouts and routing.
  • Demonstrable experience in lab-based prototyping, research and development and manufacturing environments.
  • Proficiency in electronic design automation (EDA) tools, such as KiCAD, Altium Designer or equivalent software, is required for electronics design.
  • Hands‑on experience utilising electrical engineering test equipment, including oscilloscopes, power supplies, electronic loads, and multimeters.
  • Ability to perform PCB reworking, including wire‑mounted, through‑hole and surface‑mount soldering to a high standard.
  • Experience achieving UKCA/CE product certification.
  • Knowledge of ISO‑9001:2015 and/or AS9100 standards.
  • Familiarity with DO‑254 aerospace design standards.
Location

This is an onsite position at our Head Office & Workshop in Westcott Venture Park (15 minutes drive from Bicester or Aylesbury, 30 minute drive NE of Oxford). This is not a remote position, although hybrid working may be considered.

Why Join Us?
  • Be part of a rapidly growing company at the forefront of cutting‑edge technology in the defence sector.
  • Enjoy a flexible, professional, and inclusive work culture.
  • Work with a talented team shaping the future of Autonomous Aviation, Machine Learning & Digital Twin technology.
  • Competitive pro rata salary and benefits.
  • 33 days annual holiday (pro rata), Employee Assistance Programme, cycle to work scheme and support for Continuous Professional Development.
  • We work in defence as well as commercial and ‘blue light’ sectors, so you must be comfortable working within the defence industry, and be eligible to work in the UK.
