Job summary

MTrec Technical are recruiting for a permanent Process Engineer to strengthen their SMT/PCB production team. You will own the SMT process, including solder paste printing, SPI, and AOI, while developing robust reflow profiles for a range of pastes and board masses.

You will define stencil designs for reliable paste transfer, program and tune P&P and inspection systems, lead root-cause analysis and apply lean methods to reduce scrap and downtime.

Qualifications

  • Experience in an SMT / PCB manufacturing environment.
  • Strong practical knowledge of the full SMT process.
  • Proven experience developing and optimising reflow profiles and diagnosing soldering defects.
  • Familiarity with SPI and AOI systems and the interpretation of their data.
  • Working knowledge of IPC standards, particularly IPC-A-610 and J-STD-001.

Responsibilities

  • Own the SMT process: solder paste printing, SPI, pick-and-place, reflow soldering and associated inspection.
  • Develop, validate, and optimise reflow profiles for various pastes and board masses.
  • Define stencil designs and aperture ratios for reliable paste transfer on challenging components.
  • Program, tune and maintain Pick & Place, SPI and AOI systems to balance defect capture with false calls.
  • Lead root-cause analysis and corrective action for defects.
  • Apply lean principles to reduce scrap, rework and downtime.
  • Maintain process documentation, work instructions and control plans to IPC standards.
  • Support NPI: review new designs for manufacturability and lead first-article builds.
  • Set up and qualify new products and equipment, including feeder, nozzle and configurations.

MTrec's New Opportunity

MTrec Technical are proudly representing our prestigious engineering client with the recruitment of a permanent Process Engineer to strengthen their current team. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual who is looking to apply their knowledge and skills within an industry leading employer.

The Job You'll Do
  • Own the SMT process: solder paste printing & inspection (SPI), pick-and-place, reflow soldering, and associated inspection across one or more production lines.
  • Develop, validate, and optimise reflow profiles for a range of solder pastes and board thermal masses.
  • Define stencil designs, aperture ratios, and area-ratio calculations to ensure reliable paste transfer for challenging components.
  • Program, tune, and maintain Pick & Place, SPI and AOI systems to balance defect capture against false call rates.
  • Lead root-cause analysis and corrective action for defects.
  • Apply structured problem-solving methods and lean principles to reduce scrap, rework, and downtime.
  • Maintain process documentation, work instructions, and control plans to IPC and internal standards.
  • Support NPI: review new designs for manufacturability (DFM), provide feedback to design teams, and lead first-article builds.
  • Set up and qualify new products, components, and equipment, including feeder, nozzle, and program configuration.
  • Liaise with customers and suppliers on component, material, and process-related queries.
  • Provide day-to-day technical support to production, resolving line-down issues quickly to minimise disruption.
  • Coordinate preventive maintenance and calibration of SMT equipment with the maintenance team.
  • Support equipment evaluation, installation, and commissioning for capacity or capability upgrades.
About You
  • Experience in an SMT / PCB manufacturing environment.
  • Strong practical knowledge of the full SMT process
  • Proven experience developing and optimising reflow profiles and diagnosing soldering defects.
  • Familiarity with SPI and AOI systems and the interpretation of their data.
  • Working knowledge of IPC standards, particularly IPC-A-610 (acceptability) and J-STD-001 (soldering requirements).
  • Confident using data to drive decisions — comfortable with yield analysis, SPC, and MS Excel.
  • Solid grasp of structured problem-solving.
  • Self-motivated with a genuine drive for continuous improvement.
  • A clear communicator able to work across production, quality, design, and customers
