We are proud to be working with a leading automotive technology developer to recruit an Electronic Hardware Engineer. The successful candidate will design and develop bespoke electronic hardware for automotive control unit test systems. Responsibilities include analog and digital circuit design, schematic capture, multi-layer PCB layout, and leading prototyping and validation processes. The role also involves troubleshooting hardware issues and integrating systems with automated and HIL platforms.

Their ideal candidate will have proven experience in electronic hardware design for embedded or automotive applications. Proficiency with PCB design tools such as Altium Designer, KiCAD, or Eagle is essential, alongside strong knowledge of microcontrollers, power electronics, and automotive protocols like CAN and LIN. Practical skills in soldering, prototyping, and interpreting wiring diagrams are also required.

For the position, they are offering a competitive salary of up to £55,000 per annum (dependent on experience). Benefits include 32 days annual leave (including bank holidays), a company pension, specialist training and development, plus on-site perks like a gym, free Friday lunches, birthday treats, and regular team events. Working hours are 6:30 am – 3:00 pm, Monday to Friday.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Design and develop bespoke electronic hardware for automotive ECU test systems
  • Create analog and digital circuit designs, select components, and perform schematic capture
  • Produce multi-layer PCB layouts and manage the prototyping and assembly process
  • Lead hardware validation and performance testing using oscilloscopes, logic analysers, and other tools
  • Work closely with software and test teams to integrate hardware into HIL and automated test platforms
  • Troubleshoot and resolve hardware issues, ensuring system reliability and performance
  • Support continuous improvement in electronic test systems

Skills and Experience

  • Proven experience in electronic hardware design for embedded or automotive applications
  • Proficiency in PCB design tools such as Altium Designer, KiCAD, or Eagle
  • Strong knowledge of microcontrollers, power electronics, and automotive protocols (CAN, LIN, SPI, UART)
  • Hands-on experience with soldering, prototyping, and debugging electronic systems
  • Confident using diagnostic tools including oscilloscopes and logic analysers
  • Ability to read and interpret automotive wiring diagrams and technical specifications
  • Strong problem-solving skills with attention to detail
  • Excellent teamworking and communication skills
