About The Role

We’re looking for an experienced Electro-Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Engineering team, designing and developing integrated mechanical and electrical systems for Makefast’s range of marine and safety products.

This is a varied role combining mechanical design with electrical and control system integration. You’ll work on new and existing products from concept and development through to manufacture, testing and production, working closely with Design, Production and Assembly teams to deliver practical, reliable and manufacturable engineering solutions.

We’re looking for someone with a strong engineering background who is comfortable working across both mechanical and electrical disciplines and solving complex technical problems.

Key Responsibilities
Electro-Mechanical Design & Development
  • Design and develop electro-mechanical products, systems and assemblies from concept through to manufacture.
  • Produce 3D CAD models, detailed engineering drawings and associated design documentation.
  • Design and specify mechanical components, assemblies and mechanisms.
  • Design and develop electrical systems, including component selection, wiring, connections and system integration.
  • Produce and maintain electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and technical documentation.
  • Develop and modify existing products to improve performance, reliability and manufacturability.
  • Ensure designs consider functionality, materials, manufacturing methods, assembly, quality and cost.
Control Systems & Integration
  • Support the design and integration of motors, actuators, sensors, switches and other electrical and electronic components.
  • Develop engineering solutions that integrate mechanical, electrical and control systems.
  • Support the specification and integration of control systems appropriate to the product.
  • Work with relevant technologies such as PLCs, CANbus and other control systems where applicable.
  • Support system configuration, testing and troubleshooting during product development.
Testing & Technical Support
  • Support prototype builds, product testing, validation and commissioning.
  • Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical and control system issues during development and production.
  • Work closely with Production and Assembly teams to resolve technical and manufacturing issues.
  • Provide technical support during the introduction of new products and design changes.
  • Support installation, commissioning and customer technical issues where required.
Engineering & Continuous Improvement
  • Work closely with Design, Production, Assembly and other engineering teams throughout the product development process.
  • Identify opportunities to improve product design, reliability, quality and manufacturability.
  • Support continuous improvement and engineering development projects.
  • Maintain accurate drawings, specifications and engineering documentation.
  • Ensure designs and engineering activities meet relevant company quality and engineering standards.
Candidate Requirements
Education / Qualifications
  • HNC/HND, Degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical, Electrical, Electro-Mechanical, Mechatronics Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Equivalent relevant engineering experience will also be considered.
Knowledge / Skills / Experience
  • Experience designing and developing electro-mechanical products, systems or equipment.
  • Strong understanding of both mechanical and electrical engineering principles.
  • Experience using 3D CAD software to design mechanical components and assemblies.
  • Ability to produce and interpret detailed engineering drawings.
  • Ability to produce and interpret electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Experience selecting and integrating electrical and mechanical components into complete systems.
  • Good understanding of materials, manufacturing processes and design for manufacture and assembly.
  • Experience taking engineering designs from concept through prototype, testing and manufacture.
  • Strong technical problem-solving and fault-finding skills.
  • Understanding of motors, actuators, sensors and associated control systems.
  • Knowledge of PLCs, CANbus or other control systems (Desirable).
  • Experience within the marine, automotive, industrial or similar engineering sectors (Desirable).
  • Experience of product testing, validation or commissioning (Desirable).
