Job Description:

About Us

We’re National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED), the owner and operator behind the electricity distribution systems for the Midlands, the Southwest of England and South Wales. Serving communities of more than 8 million people, our expert teams deliver heat, light and power for homes and businesses.

National Grid employs over 29,000 people worldwide. We are building an inclusive workplace, a place to actively celebrate the cultures, personalities and preferences of our colleagues – who in turn help to build the success of our business and reflect the diversity of the communities we serve. Our vision is to be at the heart of a clean, fair and affordable energy future and we are doing this in a fast-moving industry with an increasing focus on tackling climate change, exploring new energy sources that are renewable, low carbon, and improve efficiency to meet demand.

We live by our values of doing the right thing, finding a better way and using our drive to make things happen every day. That’s why we’ll help you build a worthwhile career to be proud of – whatever your role and passion. Together we can bring energy to life using your expertise and the latest technology.

Job Introduction

We are currently recruiting for a Grade 4 Network Planner to join us at our Birmingham depot on a temporary basis for a 9-month period, subject to review.

Planners design our network and work with our Engineers to construct, reinforce, alter and replace our equipment. As you can imagine, the pace is fast, and if you join us, our customers will trust you to provide excellent service and minimise any impact.

To apply, you’ll need English and Maths GCSE at Grade C/Level 4 minimum OR Functional Skills Level 2 or above. We’ll need to see evidence of your qualifications.

As part of our hybrid working approach, this role offers a mix of office and home working. Hybrid working can only be considered once your initial training is complete and is subject to business need.

*Please note you may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete.

Main responsibilities

You’ll be hands-on and customer-focused, managing multiple projects at the same time, including the design, costing, and quoting of existing and new electricity network assets. Your responsibilities will also include:

  • Planning, preparing, and delivering new services/alterations/small capital projects
  • Carrying out onsite meetings
  • Working with wayleaves/estates specialists to obtain 3rd party agreements for NGED assets
  • Financially reviewing and closing projects
  • Communicating with customers effectively to manage expectations and resolve queries
  • Scheduling contracted works
  • Communicating with local authorities and external stakeholders

Understanding our customers and their needs is essential; strong communication skills are key so you can solve their problems and explain issues clearly. As you’ll be managing your own diary, resilience, organization, and prioritization skills are necessary. Team players thrive in this role, and experience using iPads and computers is a must. You will need to be mobile throughout the area as you may be required to undertake standby duties.

You may not possess all the skills required at present but should have the confidence and ability to reach the necessary standards with appropriate training.

If not already attained, you will be required to undertake a Level 2 City & Guilds 2339 qualification and complete TAR, which includes daily diary completion and various tasks and reports.

A valid driving license is required for this role.

National Grid Electricity Distribution is committed to safeguarding the interests of the Company, colleagues, and customers.

This role is subject to a satisfactory Barring Service (DBS) check, with different levels of screening and vetting depending on the role. Some roles require a triannual check.

Please note - interviews will take place on Tuesday 26 November.
