Job description
Overview

Electrician We are looking for a qualified Electrician to join the Direct Labour Organisation (DLO) in the Estates department. Working in a fast-paced environment where no two days are the same, you will be helping to deliver an excellent maintenance service direct to our customers.

This is a full-time, open-ended position of 35 hours per week. Hours of work normally will be 8am to 4pm, with one hour for lunch. Starting Salary: £33,348.52 per annum rising to £34,2900.40 on 1st August after 1 years full service. The salary above includes an allowance of £3,389.52 per annum, paid in equal monthly instalments, to cover the following: to work 1 week in every 5 on the on-call rota; standby and call out weekends; overtime payments in line with policy. The University is a Living Wage supporter and offers benefits including pension, training, and additional earnings when on-call or overtime is needed.

This role is site based on campus. A valid driving license is necessary to use University vehicles to reach all sites. Cardiff University supports flexible working where possible.

Responsibilities
  • Undertake adaption/repair and reactive, planned, and preventative maintenance work on electrical services and equipment across the University’s estate in compliance with current IET Wiring Regulations and Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
  • Carry out testing on fire alarm, emergency lighting installations and other low voltage wiring systems.
  • Act as a competent person for electrical isolations and de-isolations.
  • Part of a mandatory out-of-hours 1 week in 5 on-call rota; respond to fault findings and provide updates on remedial works.
  • Trace faults on control panels and associated equipment, working with Building Services Engineers to rectify faults.
  • Maintain documentation in relation to work carried out and comply with Service Level Agreements.
  • Attend development and training courses to keep up-to-date with industry best practice and statutory regulations.
  • Work as a competent person for Safe Systems of Work, including fire alarm and electrical isolation/de-isolations.
  • Establish working relationships with key customers to improve service levels and communicate with University Schools/Departments and external bodies as required.
  • Assist with managing stock levels, tools, equipment, and vehicles; safeguard these assets.
  • Adhere to confidentiality, University Health and Safety policies, and Equality and Diversity. Carry out multi-disciplinary duties as required and commensurate with the role.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
  • Full Framework Apprenticeship in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Electrical Installations; NVQ Level 3 in Electrical and Electronic Engineering; City and Guilds Level 3; JIB AM2.
  • Demonstrable experience in a reactive maintenance environment with substantial post-apprenticeship experience.
  • Good understanding of general health and safety practices including risk assessments and method statements.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team and independently; prioritise tasks and achieve team goals.
  • Problem-solving skills and the ability to diagnose and escalate issues as required.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with customers and other departments.
  • A valid driving license is necessary to reach all University sites.
Desirable Criteria
  • Experience with various fire alarm and detection systems.
  • Experience with Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI) systems and controls.
  • Initial and Periodic Electrical Inspection and Testing (City & Guilds 2391) or EAL.
  • Fluency in Welsh (written and oral).
