Job summary

JTL, delivering training at the JTL Tyneside Training Centre, seeks an Experienced Electrical Tutor to plan and deliver high-quality theory and practical learning for Level 3 Installation & Maintenance Electrician apprentices. You will ensure progress and timely completion of centre-based components, using engaging methods to motivate learners and adapting to individual needs.

Qualifications

  • Level 2 and Level 3 Technical Certificates in Electrical Installation (or equivalent).
  • Level 3 Award in Education and Training (or equivalent).
  • Current BS 7671 18th Edition qualification (including amendment).
  • Level 3 Inspection and Testing qualification (where curriculum requires).
  • Level 3 TAQA Award, A1, D32/D33 or equivalent assessor qualification.
  • At least two years’ teaching or training experience within apprenticeships or FE.
  • Verifiable electrical industry experience.
  • Experience delivering and assessing theoretical and practical electrical learning.
  • Experience planning and adapting teaching to meet individual/group needs.
  • Experience taking responsibility for learner progress and achievement.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills; ability to explain complex technical concepts.
  • Confidence using digital technologies to support teaching, learning, assessment.
  • Ability to engage, motivate and challenge apprentices with varying knowledge levels.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality theoretical and practical teaching for Level 3 Installation and Maintenance Electrician apprenticeships.
  • Take responsibility for progress and achievement of allocated apprentice groups at the training centre.
  • Plan, sequence and adapt teaching to meet individual and group needs, providing appropriate support or challenge.
  • Use pedagogical approaches including questioning, assessment for learning, checking understanding and retrieval practice.
  • Follow and contribute to JTL’s curriculum, schemes of work and learning resources.
  • Use practical demonstrations, digital learning and e-learning to promote engagement and application of skills.
  • Assess apprentices’ knowledge and practical skills in line with qualification requirements.
  • Mark work and provide timely, constructive feedback.

Electrical Tutor

Location: JTL Tyneside Training Centre

Working pattern/hours: Full time & permanent. Normal working hours are 35 per week, Monday - Friday, 09:00 - 17:00.

Salary: Up to £45,000 depending on skills and experience.

About The Role

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced electrical tutor to play a key role in developing the next generation of electricians.

As an Experienced Electrical Tutor, you will independently plan and deliver high-quality theoretical and practical learning for apprentices undertaking the Level 3 Installation and Maintenance Electrician apprenticeship. You will take responsibility for the progress and achievement of allocated apprentice groups, ensuring they complete the centre-based theoretical and practical components of their qualification within agreed timescales.

You will use your technical expertise and established teaching practice to engage, motivate and challenge apprentices, adapting learning to meet individual and group needs. You will also contribute to curriculum development, standardisation, quality improvement and the support of less experienced tutors, helping to strengthen teaching and learning across JTL.

You will:
  • Deliver high-quality theoretical and practical teaching for apprentices undertaking the Level 3 Installation and Maintenance Electrician apprenticeship.
  • Take full responsibility for the progress and achievement of allocated apprentice groups while attending the training centre.
  • Plan, sequence and adapt teaching to meet individual and group needs, including apprentices who require additional support or further challenge.
  • Use effective pedagogical approaches, including questioning, assessment for learning, checking understanding and retrieval practice.
  • Follow and contribute to JTL’s centrally developed curriculum, schemes of work and learning resources.
  • Use practical demonstrations, digital learning and e-learning approaches to promote engagement and the application of technical knowledge and skills.
  • Assess apprentices’ theoretical knowledge and practical skills in line with qualification, awarding organisation and organisational requirements.
  • Mark assignments and practical assessments accurately and within agreed timescales, providing clear and developmental feedback.
  • Monitor attendance, punctuality, engagement, progress and achievement, taking timely action where concerns arise.
  • Identify apprentices at risk of falling behind and implement appropriate support and intervention with relevant colleagues.
  • Promote personal development, employability skills, professional behaviours and industry awareness through teaching and JTL’s Steps to Success curriculum.
  • Embed English, mathematics and digital skills within vocational teaching and practical activities.
  • Promote safeguarding, Prevent, equality, diversity and inclusion, British Values and health and safety throughout delivery.
  • Maintain high standards of apprentice behaviour, welfare and safe working practice within classrooms and workshops.
  • Work collaboratively with Training Officers and other colleagues to provide a joined-up and supportive apprentice experience.
  • Contribute to curriculum development, standardisation, quality assurance and continuous improvement activity.
  • Share effective practice and provide support, coaching or guidance to Early Career Tutors and other colleagues where appropriate.
  • Maintain current technical knowledge, occupational competence and teaching practice through continuing professional development.
What We’re Looking For

We are looking for an experienced electrical tutor with a strong track record of delivering effective theoretical and practical learning and supporting apprentices to achieve.

You will bring:
  • Level 2 and Level 3 Technical Certificates in Electrical Installation, or equivalent.
  • Level 3 Award in Education and Training, or equivalent.
  • Current BS 7671 18th Edition qualification, including the current amendment.
  • Level 3 Inspection and Testing qualification, where required by the curriculum.
  • Level 3 TAQA Award, A1, D32/D33 or equivalent assessor qualification.
  • At least two years’ relevant teaching or training experience within apprenticeships, further education, work-based learning or a comparable environment.
  • Verifiable electrical industry experience.
  • Experience of delivering and assessing theoretical and practical electrical learning.
  • Experience of planning and adapting teaching to meet individual and group needs.
  • Experience of taking responsibility for learner progress and achievement.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly.
  • Confidence using digital technologies to support teaching, learning and assessment.
  • The ability to engage, motivate and challenge apprentices with different levels of knowledge, confidence and experience.
It would be beneficial if you also have:
  • Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training, or equivalent higher-level teaching qualification.
  • GCSE English and Mathematics at Grade 4/C or above, or equivalent.
  • ECS Card or equivalent.
  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Electrotechnical Installation, or equivalent.
  • IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent health and safety qualification.
  • First Aid qualification.
  • Fire Marshal training.
  • Current PASMA qualification.
  • Experience of contributing to curriculum development and resource creation.
  • Experience of contributing to standardisation, moderation or other quality improvement activities.
  • Experience of coaching, mentoring or supporting early career tutors or trainers.
