Job summary

Thames Water is seeking an experienced Electrical Maintenance Technician to support the Cherwell area in Banbury. You will maintain, inspect and repair electrical equipment across wastewater sites, using proactive and reactive maintenance to keep assets running safely and reliably.

You’ll cross-skill across engineering disciplines, support local teams, and provide technical guidance as needed. A full UK driving licence is essential, with a 7:30–15:36, 38‑hour week and a standby rota on offer.

Qualifications

  • Time-served apprenticeship in an engineering sector and electrical qualifications.
  • NVQ level 3 or greater in electrical engineering.
  • BS7671 / 18th Edition electrical wiring regulations.
  • Experience maintaining, testing, installing and fault diagnosis on electrical plant equipment.
  • Experience with 3-phase systems.
  • Full UK driving licence is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Proactively and reactively maintain electrical assets across the Cherwell sites.
  • Investigate plant failures and carry out repairs quickly to avoid process interruptions.
  • Carry out service and replacement of assets including pumps, motors, starters, control gear, VSDs and PLCs.
  • Support local maintenance teams with planned and breakdown maintenance.
  • Provide technical advice and training to the team when required.
  • Undertake fault diagnostics and resolve issues promptly.
  • Interpret and update electrical drawings.
  • Provide timely feedback on work carried out daily.
  • Monitor treatment processes using SCADA and respond to alarms.

Based at Banbury, this full‑time Electrical Technician post supports Thames Water’s wastewater treatment sites across the Cherwell area. The successful candidate will maintain, inspect and repair electrical equipment, ensuring assets operate safely, efficiently and reliably. Duties include fault‑finding, planned maintenance and cross‑skilling across other engineering disciplines. Applicants should hold relevant electrical qualifications and demonstrate experience in industrial upkeep, ideally within utilities or a similar setting. The role offers up to £42,000 per annum, dependent on skills and experience, with genuine development prospects. Working within a close‑knit operations group, the technician will help uphold consistent standards while broadening operational knowledge across the wider Thames Valley North region.

Electrical Maintenance Technician – Banbury STW

We currently have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Electrical Maintenance Technician to join our team within the Cherwell area of the Thames Valley North Wastewater Operations Region. As the successful candidate, you will be responsible for ensuring that all electrical equipment across our wastewater treatment sites operates safely, efficiently, and reliably. You will use both proactive and reactive maintenance techniques to keep critical assets running and to support the resilience of our sites.

What You’ll Be Doing As An Electrical Maintenance Technician
  • Proactively and reactively maintain the electrical assets across the Cherwell sites.
  • Investigating plant failures and carrying out repairs as quickly and efficiently as possible to avoid interruptions to the process. This may involve investigating and diagnosing complex faults and carrying out repairs during incidents.
  • Carrying out service and replacement of assets. Examples of equipment that you will be working on will be various pumps and associated control gear, 3-phase motors, starters and controls, electronic control systems such as VSDs, automatic valves and penstocks, flow, level and pressure measurement, programmable logic controllers, variable speed drives and controls, and chemical handling and dosing equipment.
  • Supporting the local maintenance teams, carrying out planned and breakdown maintenance activity on electromechanical wastewater assets.
  • Providing technical advice to the wider team, referring to up‑to‑date technical knowledge, and providing training or support for technical trainees if required.
  • Undertake fault diagnostics and can resolve issues promptly.
  • Interpret and update Electrical drawings.
  • Timely feedback on work carried out daily.
  • Monitor treatment processes using the SCADA system and act on alarms as required.
Base Location: Banbury STW – OX16 4RZ

Working Pattern or hours: Monday‑Friday 7:30‑15:36, 38 hours per week, including working on a call‑out rota where you will receive additional payment.

All PPE, Tools, plus a Van will be provided.

What You Should Bring To The Role
  • Have considerable experience in electrical and systems. A time‑served apprenticeship in an engineering sector, NVQ level 3 or greater in electrical engineering.
  • You will have qualifications in BS7671 or 18th Edition electrical wiring regulations.
  • Experience in maintaining, testing, installing and fault diagnosis on electrical plant equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Experience with 3‑phased systems.
  • Knowledge and awareness of health and safety policies and processes are essential.
  • The work will require physical fitness, as you will work in confined spaces, with the successful completion of the appropriate training.
  • Participation in a 24/7 out‑of‑hours standby rota will be required after a suitable period of training and assessment, for which you will receive additional payment.
  • You will need to undertake role‑specific training to fulfil any safety and team competency requirements.
  • A full UK driving licence is essential.
