This role involves frequent travel primarily within the southern part of the region, from Scunthorpe to Northampton and Peterborough, with Wisbech centrally located.

Why this job matters

Our Electrical Power & Cooling Engineers are essential in maintaining BT’s networks 24/7, 365 days a year. They utilize their expertise in Low and High Voltage systems, generators, emergency lighting, cooling, alarms, and UPS systems to ensure the BT estate functions reliably in various environments, including exchange buildings, radio sites, rooftops, and outdoors. They support electrical power systems and cooling equipment vital for network operations, meeting strict SLAs, and take ownership of their patches while coaching colleagues.

A comprehensive technical training pathway will be provided, comprising face-to-face, virtual, internal, and external sessions, which may involve overnight stays and travel.

The role requires participation in an out-of-hours callout framework (typically 1 in 4), supporting 24x7 service. A full UK manual driver’s license is mandatory.

What You'll Do

  • Identify & report HSE/Compliance/Design issues proactively.
  • Own designated patches and sites, contributing to regional and unit objectives.
  • Share best practices and support colleagues with new ideas, technologies, or processes.
  • Take responsibility for critical network repair, provision, and maintenance activities.
  • Coordinate work priorities with patch managers and senior colleagues.
  • Conduct risk assessments for health and safety.
  • Raise issues/risk to senior staff to facilitate improvements.
  • Proactively develop personal skills to support team work.
  • Suggest process improvements within and beyond the work area.
  • Monitor, action, and ensure compliance with health surveillance and other requirements; maintain professional appearance with provided clothing.

What You'll Bring

  • Physical capability to bend, stretch, kneel, crouch, climb, and work at various levels, including lifting heavy objects and recognizing coloured wiring.
  • Mandatory qualifications: City & Guilds 2360 parts 1+2 or equivalent NVQ, or industry-recognized qualification; BTEC Electrical Engineering Level 3/HNC/HND/MOET Level 3/ET Level 3 or equivalent; Full UK manual driving license.
  • Preferred qualifications: 18th Edition Regulations, UPS experience, HVAC Refrigeration C&G/NVQ Level 3, F-GAS Category 1, experience with air conditioning systems, DC power systems, and mentoring/supervisory roles. Qualifications may be updated over time; experienced hires will be assessed accordingly, and trainees will be trained to meet these standards.
