Job Title: Electrical Machines Engineer
Type: Full Time
Locations: Derby, Solihull, or Bristol

We have an exciting opportunity for an Electrical Machines Engineer to join our team in the UK (Derby, Solihull, or Bristol). Our Electrical and Electronics team is part of E24S (Electrical, Electronics, Systems, Software, and System Security) and supports all our operating sectors of Civil Aerospace, Defence, and Power Systems. Our current activities focus heavily on electrification of products, including electrical power, power conversion, energy storage, and electrical power distribution solutions. Projects vary from TRL1-6 technology development to capability acquisition programs, involving concept studies, modeling, simulation, prototype development, rig testing, and full-scale demonstration, progressing into TRL6+ product introduction with validation and certification.

Role Responsibilities:

  1. Develop and analyze electrical machines, including requirements definition, trade studies, and design for manufacture and assembly.
  2. Design electrical machines from prototypes to production, covering powers from a few kW to several MW.
  3. Contribute to a range of electrical technologies, including high power density and high-speed machines, suitable for high-temperature and harsh environments.
  4. Develop and validate power systems and sub-systems with electrical machines in motoring and generating applications, involving AC-AC, AC-DC, and DC-DC conversion stages.
  5. Collaborate with manufacturing engineers and supply chain on Design for X principles.
  6. Work with electrical teams to develop complete power system requirements and solutions.
  7. Coordinate with materials specialists to ensure robust insulation and safety in challenging conditions.
  8. Create clear product specifications, performance requirements, and design documentation.
  9. Conduct laboratory testing, including hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing.
  10. Support the development of Rolls-Royce’s electrical machine capabilities, including process and test facility development.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent; Chartered Engineer status preferred.
  • Significant experience in designing electrical machines for aerospace or similar industries (e.g., automotive).
  • Experience with interfacing electrical components like inverters, energy storage, drives, and powertrains.
  • Knowledge of various machine types: Permanent Magnet, Switched Reluctance, Wound Field, Induction, including their benefits and limitations.
  • Proficiency with electromagnetic, thermal, and mechanical design tools such as MotorCAD, COMSOL, or ANSYS Maxwell.
  • Familiarity with electrical system analysis tools like MATLAB/SIMULINK, PSPICE.
  • Experience in technical documentation, including design reports and schematics.
  • Familiarity with aerospace certification standards (e.g., CS-25, CS-E, DO160) is beneficial.
  • Excellent communication skills for diverse audiences.
