Job description

Job Description

Electrical Machines Engineer

Full Time

Locations: Derby, Solihull, or Bristol

We have an exciting opportunity for an Electrical Machines Engineer to join our team in the UK, preferably in Derby or Solihull, with Bristol as a possible location.

Our Electrical and Electronics team is part of E24S (Electrical, Electronics, Systems, Software, and System Security) and supports all our operating sectors, including Civil Aerospace, Defence, and Power Systems.

Current activities focus heavily on electrification of products across the company’s main businesses, including developing electrical power generation, power conversion, energy storage, and electrical power distribution solutions. Projects range from TRL1-6 technology development and capability acquisition programs, involving concept architecture studies, modelling, simulation, rig prototype development and testing, up to full-scale product demonstrators, and TRL6+ new product introduction programs with associated validation and certification work.

Why Rolls-Royce?

Rolls-Royce is one of the most enduring and iconic brands in the world, known for innovation over the past century. We design, build, and service systems that provide critical power where safety and reliability are paramount.

We are committed to being a force for progress, powering, protecting, and connecting people everywhere.

We aim to ensure that our history of excellence and ingenuity continues into the future, and we invite you to join us on this journey.

We offer a caring and inclusive environment where you can be yourself, with an innovative culture that invests in your growth and allows you to make a difference.

What we offer:

Excellent development opportunities, a competitive salary, and benefits including bonuses, employee support assistance, and discounts.

Our hybrid working model allows flexibility between office, home, or remote locations, with an expectation of attending the workplace approximately three days per week for collaboration and other specific reasons.

What you will be doing:

In this role, you will need in-depth knowledge of various electrical rotating machines, including design, analysis, manufacturing, and verification processes. Utilization of electrical machine modelling and design tools is essential. Strong organizational and communication skills are vital, as you may work on multiple projects simultaneously and communicate across all levels of the organization. Your responsibilities include:

  • Developing electrical machines, including requirements definition, trade studies, design, and analysis.
  • Designing electrical machines from low TRL prototypes to production standards, covering powers from a few kW to several MW.
  • Contributing to a range of electrical technologies, from high power density, high-speed machines to high-temperature, harsh environment solutions.
  • Developing and validating power systems and sub-systems that integrate electrical machines for generation and motoring applications, involving various conversion stages connecting to grids, aircraft systems, or other loads.
  • Collaborating with manufacturing engineers and supply chain on Design for X principles.
  • Working with the electrical team to develop power system requirements and solutions.
  • Implementing robust solutions with materials specialists for safe and reliable performance in challenging conditions.
  • Producing clear specifications, performance requirements, and design documentation, involving mechanical, electrical, and systems teams, as well as partners and suppliers.
  • Conducting rig/laboratory testing of experimental systems, including hardware or hardware-in-the-loop (HIL).
  • Contributing to the development of Rolls-Royce’s electrical machine capabilities, including design, analysis, and test facility development.
Who we’re looking for:

At Rolls-Royce, safety, integrity, simplicity, and making a difference are core principles guiding us. We seek candidates who embody these qualities.

To succeed in this role, you should have:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent; Chartered Engineer status is preferred.
  • Significant experience designing electrical machines for power generation in aerospace or similar industries (e.g., automotive).
  • Experience or understanding of interfacing electrical components such as inverters, energy storage devices, drives, and powertrains.
  • Knowledge of various machine types, including Permanent Magnet, Switched Reluctance, Wound Field, and Induction machines, with an understanding of their benefits and limitations.
  • Experience with electromagnetic, thermal, and mechanical design tools, such as MotorCAD, COMSOL, or ANSYS Maxwell, and optimization tools like iSight or Optislang is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with electrical system analysis tools like MATLAB/SIMULINK, PSPICE, etc.
  • Proven ability to produce technical documents, including design reports, interface documents, procurement, and test specifications, and electrical schematics.
  • Familiarity with aerospace certification standards (e.g., CS-25, CS-E, DO160) is advantageous.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, for diverse audiences.

We are an equal opportunities employer committed to diversity and inclusion. We welcome applications from people with a refugee background.
