Job summary

British Steel is seeking an experienced Improvement Engineer Electrical SRSM to partner with manufacturing and maintenance, driving asset improvement and reliability in line with plant priorities. The role requires leading safety, standards, and budgeting activities, with strong CAMF knowledge and KPI-driven performance.

You will mentor teams, oversee improvement plans, and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations while delivering value within defined budgets.

Qualifications

  • Degree level in engineering or related field.
  • Proficiency with CAMF standards and reliability tools.
  • Strong leadership and communication to motivate teams.

Job Title: Improvement Engineer Electrical SRSM

Reports to: Plant Engineer

Salary: Up to £54590 p.a.

What you need to know about this role

Working in partnership with manufacturing and maintenance to ensure that processes, systems, equipment and people are maintained and developed in an effective way to meet plant management priorities for asset improvement and reliability whilst maintaining safe and legal compliance.

  • Ensures engineering activities are carried out in a safe manner in compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation.
  • Conducts safety tours and audits.
  • Sets / agrees standards and goals with Plant Management.
  • Provides / sources specialist technical support as required for the department.
  • Ensures that a consistent approach is in place for the use of agreed CAMF standards and work principles.
  • Mentors and coaches Engineers and Craft as appropriate to the discipline and activity.
  • Monitors plant performance by use of agreed KPI's in conjunction with Maintenance Engineers and develops improvement plan.
  • Interfaces with business support teams and organisations both internal and external including RD&T, P&T etc.
  • Lead and or participate in installation or process reviews.
  • Building on analysis develops improvement strategy to support goals for designated area. Liaises with Plant Management and others to gain approval and agreement on way forward.
  • Owns agreed MM, SRE & capital budgets.
  • Develops and delivers the improvement plan agreed for the area within agreed timescales and budgets. Prioritises projects using a recognised tool i.e. RAM & 'J' score.
  • Supports and provides technical leadership to the maintenance team when required to do so, for example during peak activity periods such as shutdowns.
  • Provide technical leadership when required to do so based on skill set
  • Prioritises key Performance improvement activity across the area.
  • Monitors success of delivered improvement plan.
  • Establish and deploy best practice principles within the department. e.g. CAMF.
  • Ensure that a KPI driven culture exists down to all levels in the organisation and monitors the use to aid performance improvement, accountability and improvement plan development.
  • Sets maintenance team Engineering professional competence requirements.
  • Develops maintenance team succession plan.
  • Ensures delivered improvements align with to the QMS.
What we need to know about you

The jobholder will be an experienced engineer, ideally educated to degree level with a detailed knowledge of their appropriate engineering discipline and with a working knowledge of other disciplines.

They are required to be proficient in PC skills. The jobholder must have capability in use and knowledge of best practice tools and techniques and key performance indicators in order to determine improvements and developments required for equipment, processes, systems and people.

The jobholder must be self-motivated, a good communicator and be capable of motivating and leading others.

Knowledge and understanding of Reliability management tools and techniques are key prerequisites; these include a full working knowledge of CAMF in use and Study design and build principles.
