Specialism: Temporary Electrical & Mechanical Site Services
Full-Time, Permanent
www.selectplanthire.com/services

Select, part of Laing O'Rourke, is one of the UK's largest and most capable suppliers of equipment and services to the construction industry. We provide innovative, integrated site-wide services across major projects — and now we're looking for a skilled Technical Estimator with an electrical bias to join our Estimating team in Dartford.

About the Role:

You'll be a key member of a small, experienced Estimating team, supporting both internal clients (Laing O'Rourke, CHT, Expanded – 80% of workload) and helping grow our external client base through competitive tenders with principal contractors. For external projects, you'll develop full schematics, perform cable calculations, and provide detailed, accurate quote breakdowns.

Our project scopes span temporary electrical and mechanical services — from 110V low-voltage systems through to high-voltage infrastructure, valued between £500k and £5m+.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop detailed cost estimates and design scopes for temporary site services (electrical and mechanical).
  • Prepare comprehensive tender submissions with clear estimating assumptions and supporting strategy.
  • Liaise with internal teams, suppliers, and subcontractors to gather pricing and mitigate risk.
  • Maintain all estimate files, tender registers, and handover documentation.
  • Support project delivery teams post-tender with clarifications and estimating insight.
  • Engage with operational and bid teams to develop accurate, timely, and winning proposals.

What You'll Bring:

  • Proven experience in electrical estimating within the construction or temporary works environment.
  • Solid understanding of mechanical and electrical temporary site systems (e.g. plant, cabling, large-scale distribution).
  • A first-principles approach to estimating, with a focus on practicality, value, and accuracy.
  • Confidence using Microsoft Excel (essential); familiarity with TRIMBLE Prodesign is a plus.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Willingness to travel nationally on an ad-hoc basis. Full UK driving licence required.
  • Apprenticeship-trained with NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in Electrical discipline.
  • BTEC HNC or equivalent desirable.

Why Join Select?

  • Be part of a forward-thinking division within Laing O'Rourke.
  • Influence exciting infrastructure and construction projects across the UK.
  • Join a highly experienced team with mentorship and growth opportunities.
  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package.
