Job summary

Altrad UK, Ireland & Nordics are seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to support the Design Authority in a nuclear/high risk environment. The role focuses on electrical design, substantiation, and compatibility with safety cases throughout life cycles.

The position is hybrid (office based & home) in the UK, with responsibilities spanning design assessment, technical justification, and coordinating with internal and external stakeholders to ensure compliance with relevant standards.

Qualifications

• Experienced Electrical Engineer with knowledge of industrial plant and machinery in an HV environment.

Responsibilities

• Authoring, development, assessment, maintenance and management of Nuclear Infrastructure Design Substantiation documents.
• Authoring, development, assessment, maintenance and management of design changes/concessions
• Presentation of Design substantiations to Due Process nuclear safety committees
• Production and development of EIMT Schedule, operating procedures and results to satisfy design requirements and safety case through life
• Producing/assessing Periodic Review of Safety reports
• Providing advice and direction to internal and external stakeholders
• Production of ITA/IPR Scopes of work
• Apply engineering methods to design, develop, manufacture, construct, commission, operate, maintain, decommission and recycle processes in a nuclear environment
• Producing robust technical justification for high voltage design modifications to be authorised
• Reviewing technical reports and safety case submissions from external contractors
• Check and review calculations and documents written by staff

Altrad are currently looking for an experienced Electrical Engineer to join the team.

We are looking for an experienced Electrical Engineer to support the technical capability of the Design Authority (DA). This role will be suited to engineers with experience in Electrical Design, although candidates experienced in Electrical Installation or Maintenance are also welcomed.

Key Deliverables

• Authoring, development, assessment, maintenance and management of the suite of Nuclear Infrastructure Design Substantiation documents.
• Authoring, development, assessment, maintenance and management of design changes/concessions
• Presentation of Design substantiations, to ‘Due Process’ nuclear safety committees Production and development of Examination, Inspection, Maintenance & Testing (EIMT) Schedule, operating procedures and results to satisfy design requirements and safety case through life
• Producing/assessing Periodic Review of Safety reports
• Providing advice and direction to internal and external stakeholders
• Production of Independent Technical Assessment (ITA)/Independent Peer Review (IPR) Scopes of work
• Use a combination of general and specialist engineering knowledge and understanding to apply existing and emerging technology Apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to design, develop, manufacture, construct, commission, operate, maintain, decommission and re-cycle engineering processes, systems, services and products in a nuclear/high risk environment.
• Producing robust technical justification to allow for relevant high voltage electrical design modifications to be authorised within a high hazard industry
• Review technical reports and other safety case submissions from external contractors
• Check and review calculations and technical documents written by other members of staff

Essential

Key Requirements / Qualifications:

• Experienced Electrical Engineer with previous knowledge of industrial plant and machinery in an HV environment (i.e. HV electrical supply network including cabling, substations, etc.)
• Knowledge of current design standards and working practices including British & European Standards.
• Theoretical and practical skill and experience across concept design, detailed design and construction stages across a range of electrical engineering projects (ideally including industrial and/or maritime).
• Experience in the design assessment of HV electrical plant and equipment to withstand hazards.
• Experience of authoring and producing robust technical justification and supporting documentation to allow for relevant electrical design modifications to be authorised within a high hazard industry.
• Experience working on multi-discipline projects providing engineering input (ideally within industrial and/or maritime)

Desirable

• Ideal candidates would already have experience within Defence or a similar nuclear environment.
• Familiarity with safety case development techniques e.g. HAZID/HAZOP studies.
• Experience of working in the UK nuclear industry (energy or defence), particularly in the design and assessment of safety-related structures, systems and components.
• Knowledge of UK and US nuclear industry regulation and practice, and application of relevant nuclear-specific codes and standards.
