Job summary

Sonoco is seeking an experienced Electrical Maintenance Engineer to maintain electrical equipment, machinery, and related systems across the plant, while continually improving reliability and safety compliance. You will develop plans, perform risk assessments, and update obsolete equipment.

The role includes planning updates, supporting maintenance strategies, and mentoring site electrical resources on fault-finding and safe working practices to ensure continued production performance.

Qualifications

  • Experience with Allen Bradley/Rockwell PLC in high-speed manufacturing is preferred.
  • Time served Electrical Engineering Apprenticeship with awareness of 18th Edition and BS7671.
  • Knowledge of Electricity at Work Regulations and Safe Working Practices including Lock Off/Tag Out.

Responsibilities

  • Complete and record electrical installation and modification work to ensure compliance with health and safety legislation.
  • Conduct risk assessment and write Safe System of Work for tasks and equipment; assist PUWER assessment.
  • Plan and implement updates and replacement of obsolete equipment.
  • Support maintenance strategy; develop schedules in the CMMS to improve reliability.
  • Monitor faults and implement reliability improvements; document with root cause analysis.

Job description

Purpose of Job

Maintain electrical equipment, machinery and services, auxiliary instruments/gauges, improve reliability and comply with safety requirements across the Plant. Develop plans for replacing or updating old and obsolete equipment, the attitude to fix faults and offer continuous improvement across all areas.

Principal Accountabilities
  • Complete and record all electrical installation and modification work on machines and equipment to ensure compliance with Health and Safety legislation.
  • Conduct risk assessment and write Safe System of Work for various tasks and equipment, and assist in PUWER assessment of plant and equipment.
  • To plan and implement updates and replacement of obsolete equipment.
  • To support the maintenance strategy for old and new equipment, develop schedules on the computerised maintenance management system to improve reliability, including power plant, PLC and control systems, plant instrumentation and any servicing or calibration.
  • Monitor faults or breakdowns logged and associated losses and implement reliability improvements.
  • Mentor site electrical resource and support with logical fault‑finding techniques to resolve issues, and to follow up with corrective actions, write up ‘one‑point lessons’ and appropriate roll‑out to other plant and equipment.
  • Design and draw up circuit diagrams using a CAD system; write up relevant PLC programmes with an updated Control Synopsis.
  • Install hardware for improvements to the line, which can include conduit, sensors, relays, range of PLCs, logic systems, level equipment, instrumentation, motors, control equipment etc.
  • Complete and record maintenance checks and repairs on machines and equipment in line with maintenance schedules.
  • Monitor and report on completion.
  • Develop schedules on the computerised maintenance management system to improve reliability.
  • Utilise logical fault‑finding techniques to resolve issues, consulting drawings, PLC programmes and test equipment e.g. multimeter, oscilloscope, logic probe etc.
  • Install or commission new equipment in conjunction with group personnel, external contractors and suppliers.
  • Liaison with sub‑contractors and service suppliers.
  • Adhere to quality and food initiatives regarding Food Safety.
H&S & Environment
  • Comply with Sonoco EHS policy and statutory requirements at all times.
  • Lead by example on all matters of Health & Safety.
  • Encouragement of others to engage in safety discussions and projects.
  • Ensure that all activities are carried out in accordance with all applicable safety procedures.
  • Completion of all mandatory Convergence training and refreshers as required in a timely manner.
  • Practice safe working techniques in all that you do.
  • Support the business with any safety related initiatives and programs.
  • Development of safety‑related skills, including attending any safety‑related training as and when required.
  • Support the business by carrying out safety observations and discussions with others, finding any fixes or improvements which can be proposed to the site.
  • Effective waste management control within the relevant area of responsibility, to control, reduce and eliminate waste within anything that we do.
  • Adhere to high levels of GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) and ensure 5S is carried out at all times.
  • Any additional role‑specific H&S responsibilities.
  • Any additional role‑specific Environmental responsibilities.
Knowledge & Experience Minimum Job Requirements
  • Preferably experience of Allen Bradley/Rockwell PLC in high‑speed manufacturing, using computerised maintenance systems, and hands‑on experience of electrical installation projects would be advantageous.
  • Time served Electrical Engineering Apprentice and have an awareness of 18th Edition as well as competency and experience in working to requirements set in BS7671, BS2391 and other legislation.
  • Have knowledge of Electricity at Work Regulations and of Safe Working Practices including Lock Off and Tag Out.
