Overview

Electrical Design Engineer is needed for a large Facilities Management organisation based in Middlesbrough who are looking to employ an experienced Electrical Design Engineer with hands–on experience in low–voltage electrical systems design, BS 7671 and IET guidance notes. The role involves preparing electrical design solutions for retrofit decarbonisation projects, new–build energy centres and heat networks. The successful candidate should have experience in AutoCAD and REVIT and knowledge of lighting, small power / switchgear, data, fire alarm, security and access control systems.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare electrical design solutions for retrofit decarbonisation projects, new–built energy centres and heat networks, taking a RIBA 1 brief to RIBA 4 technical design.
  • Carry out electrical load assessments and size switchgear, distribution systems and equipment.
  • Perform calculations using proprietary software and understand installation and reference methods used in calculations.
  • Prepare design models using AutoCAD and REVIT; utilise application–specific software such as PVSyst and Dialux.
  • Prepare calculations and engineering analyses to validate simulation models and confirm design requirements/performance.
  • Work within a multidisciplinary design team to produce coordinated designs with mechanical, structural/civil, architectural, energy and specialist designers.
  • Support market research to identify new technology and design innovations and assess their suitability for projects.
  • Support technical options appraisals to qualify best available techniques for low carbon systems.
  • Prepare design/functional specifications and contribute to tender scopes.
  • Lead or contribute to Design Stage Reports and customer–facing documents.
  • Undertake Designer Risk Assessments to identify and minimise health, safety and environmental risks associated with designs.
  • Ensure compliance with statutory, regulatory and contractual requirements applicable to design.
Experience you need
  • Advanced level understanding of low–voltage electrical systems design (general).
  • Good knowledge of British Standards, design guides and Building Regulations.
  • Good knowledge of BS 7671 and IET technical guidance notes.
  • Aware of health and safety and CDM regulations.
  • Ability to produce schematic layouts and single–line diagrams from concept to detailed design (with assistance from senior engineers).
  • Knowledge of lighting, small power / switchgear, data, fire alarm, security and access control systems relevant to the role.
  • Aware of stakeholder involvement within the project life cycle.
  • Aware of environmental, cultural and health and safety issues related to design.
  • Ability to prepare draft specifications, stage reports and tender documentation.
  • Competent in AutoCAD and REVIT; proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams).
  • Understanding of environmental factors affecting electrical design.
Qualifications and other requirements
  • DBS Enhanced with Barred Lists check required; ability to pass is essential.
