My client is expanding their Electrical/Controls Design team and is seeking an experienced multi–disciplined Electrical Designer. This role is based in Plymouth, offering a dynamic work environment where you will design and document bespoke control systems for cutting–edge machinery.
Main Purpose of the Role
The Electrical Design Engineer will engage in the conceptual design of electrical and pneumatic control systems for bespoke automation machinery across various industries. This role involves detailed design work, component specification, parts list generation, risk assessment of control systems, and generation of supporting CE documentation. The ideal candidate will have robust experience in electrical and pneumatic design disciplines and be proficient in relevant software such as Eplan, Sistema, or Pilz safety software.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Conduct initial meetings with customers and the sales team to gather requirements.
- Participate in concept meetings and investigate potential solutions.
- Communicate with customers and engineering teams to clarify requirements and meet specifications.
- Generate accurate and timely electrical system architecture drawings for each customer project.
- Specify industrial controls components such as PLCs, HMIs, Remote I/O Systems, Variable Speed Drives, Servo Motors, and Robots.
- Create technical files for each project, including controls design build folders, parts lists, and safety requirement specifications.
- Perform risk assessments for safety–related parts of control systems using tools like Pilz or Sistema.
- Collaborate with cross–functional teams including mechanical engineers, project managers, and programmers to integrate electrical systems seamlessly into overall project designs.
- Lead projects technically, ensuring adherence to budgets and timelines.
- Support the manufacturing department during the assembly/test stages and attend factory or site acceptance testing with customers.
- Stay updated on emerging technologies and best practices in electrical engineering to ensure compliance with the latest standards.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Strong foundation in electronics and electrical engineering.
- Proven ability to lead projects from development through to manufacturing.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with colleagues and customers.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office suite and Eplan circuit design software.
- Familiarity with safety system design principles and electrical standards such as BS EN60204–1 and BS EN ISO 13849–1.
- Minimum of 2 years of industry–related experience.
- Formal engineering qualification in electrical design.
Desirable Skills
- Understanding of UL508A Industrial Control Panels electrical principles.
- Knowledge of Sistema or Pilz safety requirements software.
- Familiarity with components from Omron, Rockwell, Siemens, Mitsubishi, B&R, Turck Banner, Pilz.
- Apprenticeship background or practical experience in automation systems.
- HNC/HND or Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Mechatronics, or similar discipline.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel, including overseas assignments.
