Job description

Friday: 8:00am - 1:00pm

We’re looking for an experienced Electrical Design Engineer to join an established engineering team in Huddersfield, working on technically interesting, multi-disciplinary projects from initial concept through to completion.

This is a great opportunity for an engineer who enjoys having genuine ownership of their designs and wants to be involved throughout the full project lifecycle — from developing the initial solution and producing detailed electrical designs, through to manufacturing, FAT and commissioning.

You’ll be joining a team where your technical knowledge will have a direct impact on the quality, performance and commercial success of the projects delivered.

The Role

Reporting to the Principal Electrical Engineer, you’ll take ownership of the electrical design scope for assigned projects, developing robust, practical and cost-effective solutions that meet customer requirements and relevant industry standards.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading the electrical design lifecycle from concept and system architecture through to detailed design, validation and delivery.
  • Providing technical engineering input during the proposal and quotation stage.
  • Producing detailed electrical control system designs using AutoCAD Electrical, including schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, fabrication drawings and interconnection schedules.
  • Selecting and specifying electrical components, instrumentation and control equipment based on performance, reliability, safety and cost.
  • Creating and maintaining accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs) to support procurement and manufacturing.
  • Ensuring designs comply with relevant standards and customer requirements, including IEC, ATEX, UL and CSA.
  • Producing technical documentation and manuals for Operations & Maintenance (O&M) requirements.
  • Providing technical support to manufacturing, testing and operations teams.
  • Supporting Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and site commissioning when required.
  • Working closely with mechanical, process and other engineering disciplines throughout the project.
  • Contributing to the development of internal design standards, processes and best practice.
  • Considering the commercial impact of design decisions, including their effect on project cost and profitability.
About You

We’re looking for someone with solid industrial electrical design experience who can take ownership of projects and make sound engineering decisions.

You’ll have:

  • 5+ years' experience in electrical design engineering, ideally within industrial, oil & gas or petrochemical environments.
  • HNC/HND (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Strong experience with AutoCAD Electrical or an equivalent electrical CAD package.
  • Experience designing control panels, MCCs, switchboards and power distribution systems.
  • A good understanding of industrial electrical engineering principles and standards.
  • Knowledge of hazardous area equipment and certification, such as ATEX, IECEx or Class/Division, would be advantageous.
  • Knowledge of intrinsically safe system design would be beneficial.
  • A practical understanding of electrical installation, commissioning and maintenance.
  • The ability to balance technically sound design solutions with practical and commercial considerations.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Good communication skills and the confidence to work with customers and other departments.
  • The ability to work independently while also contributing effectively within a multidisciplinary engineering team.
  • A strong focus on quality, safety and continuous improvement.

If you’re an experienced Electrical Design Engineer looking for a role where you can have real ownership of projects and see your designs through from concept to completion, we’d be keen to hear from you.
