We are recruiting for an Electrical Design Engineer

  • Salary: £40,000 - £65,000 Dependent on Skills and Experience

As we continue to grow our portfolio of high voltage projects, we are seeking to expand our in-house design team with opportunities available at various levels of seniority. These roles will support the delivery of safe, efficient, and compliant electrical infrastructure for both new and expanding energy developments.

This position sits within our Engineering team and reports directly to the Design Manager. As an Electrical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the design of high voltage electrical infrastructuresupporting projects from initial concept through to constructionwhile ensuring full compliance with all relevant standards and regulations.

This role will play a key part in ensuring our projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality. You will collaborate closely with clients and internal teams to drive progress and deliver successful outcomes.

Duties And Responsibilities Of The Role Include

As an Electrical Design Engineer, you will bring demonstrable experience in one or more of the areas outlined below. At Powersystems, we understand that design engineers often specialise in specific aspects of high voltage design, and we do not expect candidates to have expertise across every area. If you have the enthusiasm to learn, we will provide the support and opportunities needed to broaden your design experience and develop your capabilities.

  • Design of HV substations and electrical infrastructure (11kV to 132kV) - including substation building layouts, primary substation equipment layouts, busbar designs, primary equipment specifications
  • Protection & Control design preparation of protection SLDs, protection scheme specifications, protection & control schematics, protection coordination reports, Relay configuration files.
  • HV Cable Design design and verification of cable designs, cable ampacity rating calculations & reports using standard manufacturers data and finite analysis software packages (Cymcap).
  • Systems studies undertake preliminary design studies using Digsilent Powerfactory (Load Flow, Fault Level, Protection Coordination, Harmonics, P28), management and review of system studies provided by external consultants
  • Carry out earthing designs using excel and CDEGs and review earthing designs provided by external consultants
  • Prepare detailed design packages including cable schedules, schematics, block wiring diagrams, ADMD calculations, battery charger sizing
  • Preparation of general arrangement drawings, support the CAD and panel assembly teams
  • Ensure designs prioritise safety and comply with CDM and Health & Safety regulations
  • Visit sites for surveys, inspections, and factory acceptance tests
  • Engage directly with clients, consultants, and DNO/TNO representatives to deliver projects on time and to specification
  • Uphold a professional image, contribute to Powersystems' success, and proactively improve services and efficiency

Heres what you need to be successful in the role:

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Previous experience in electrical design, possibly within electrical contracting or utilities sectors
  • Strong technical knowledge of power engineering
  • Ability to manage multiple design projects and meet conflicting deadlines
  • High level of communication, being able to justify design decisions to clients and colleagues
  • Capable of producing high quality written technical reports
  • A postgraduate qualification in Power Systems is advantageous
  • Working towards or holding professional registration (IENG/CENG) with the IET (or equivalent)
  • Strong organisational, time management, IT (MS Office), and report writing skills, with excellent spoken and written English.
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical and commercial information, negotiate effectively, and contribute to a dynamic team.
  • Adaptable, resilient, proactive, willing to travel across the UK with occasional overnight stays and hold a full UK driving licence.
