Job summary

Jackson Hogg is recruiting an Electrical Design/Controls Engineer for a global defence manufacturing business in Newcastle. The role covers developing electrical designs from concept to manufacturing detail and programming PLC systems for PEL products, with hands-on support for testing and commissioning globally.

The ideal candidate holds a degree in Electrical/Control/Electronics Engineering or related fields, with experience in electronics design, PLC software, and robotics/automation.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Electrical, Control, or Electronics Engineering, Science, Physics or Maths.
  • Experience of electronics and electrical design is essential.
  • Knowledge of PLC software is beneficial.
  • Experience of robotics / machine control systems / automation is beneficial.
  • Experience working in a multi-disciplined engineering team.
  • Able to think laterally when problem solving.
  • Ability to investigate and interpret data, issues, and situations, to make sound decisions in high-stress situations.
  • Appetite for learning new technologies and applications.
  • Ability to communicate complex procedures to colleagues.
  • Self-motivating, initiative-taking and results-driven approach.
  • Ability to work to deadlines whilst maintaining high quality

Responsibilities

  • Work within a multi-disciplinary engineering team to meet project requirements.
  • Develop electrical designs from concept through to manufacturing detail, including specifications of proprietary components, supporting analysis and reports.
  • Develop, program, and test PLC systems for controlling PEL products.
  • Host and participate in internal and external design reviews, providing technical input throughout development.
  • Support verification of fellow engineers’ designs.
  • Develop testing requirements for prototype and product manufacture.
  • Support build, commissioning, and trials of new products.
  • Analyse problems and produce ideas/designs to solve them.
  • Work within budget to deliver safe, effective products on-time and to specification.
  • Maintain knowledge of current technical trends and innovation to assist in development of current and future products.
  • Support delivery of customer training.

Job description

Jackson Hogg is delighted to be working with a global defence manufacturing business based in Newcastle, for the appointment of an Electrical Design/Controls Engineer.

The Engineering function is a multi-disciplined team that provides technical support to all other functions and is responsible for product design, innovative product development and the delivery of the complete manufacturing and technical data packs associated with our contracts. The team also provides hands‑on support for installation, testing and commissioning of new equipment, both internally and at our customers’ sites, all over the world.

Key Responsibilities
  • Working within a multi-disciplinary engineering team to meet the project requirements.
  • Develop electrical designs from concept through to manufacturing detail, including specifications of proprietary components, supporting analysis and reports.
  • Develop, program, and test PLC systems for controlling PEL products.
  • Hosting and participating in internal and external design reviews, providing technical input throughout the development of a product/solution.
  • Supporting verification of fellow engineers’ designs.
  • Developing the testing requirements for both prototype and product manufacture.
  • Supporting build, commissioning, and trials of new products.
  • Analysing problems and producing ideas/designs to solve them.
  • Working within the budget to deliver safe, effective products, on‑time and to specification.

Skills/Experience
  • A degree in Electrical, Control, or Electronics Engineering, Science, Physics or Maths
  • Experience of electronics and electrical design is essential (although more electrical biased)
  • Knowledge of PLC software is beneficial.
  • Experience of robotics / machine control systems / automation is beneficial.
  • Experience working in a multi-disciplined engineering team.
  • Able to think laterally when problem solving.

This is a permanent, hybrid role with 2 days working from home and early Friday finish.
